[January 27, 2011]  (AP)  A strong winter storm moving up the Eastern Seaboard will bring more significant snowfall to the Northeast on Thursday.

Swaths of light snow are expected in the central and northern Appalachians, while periods of heavy snow will develop from northern Virginia to Maine through Thursday afternoon. Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected in southern New England by midmorning Thursday. In addition to snow, strong winds may create periods of blowing snow and lowered visibilities during the morning commute. Drivers are encouraged to take extra precautions while traveling over slippery roads. The storm system will travel northeastward through the day and should reach the Canadian Maritimes by the afternoon.

Meanwhile, in the Midwest, a cold front from south-central Canada will linger over the Great Lakes, sparking more light snow showers in parts of the upper and lower Great Lakes.

Elsewhere, high pressure will remain the dominant weather feature of the West. Areas from the West Coast to the mid- and lower Mississippi River valleys will experience dry and quiet weather conditions.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of minus 16 degrees at Presque Isle, Maine, to a high of 78 degrees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
