Marvin Spaits

[July 11, 2011]  LINCOLN -- Marvin Eugene Spaits, 84, of Lincoln, died Friday, July 8, 2011, at 8:23 p.m. at The Christian Village Nursing Home.

His funeral will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Peasley Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Ryan Edgecombe officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. Tuesday until the service time.

Burial will be in the Atlanta Cemetery..

Mr. Spaits was an Illinois state trooper in the 1950s and retired from R.A. Cullinan of Tremont in 1984.

He was born on Aug. 27, 1926, in Atlanta. His parents were Reuben and Ella Mae Reinhart Spaits. He married Linda Finfrock on Dec. 27, 1980, in Beason. She preceded him in death on Sept. 11, 2009.

He is survived by one sister, Fonda Wallen of Lincoln; one brother, Marshall Spaits of Athens, Ala.; one stepdaughter, Cheryl (and James) Newman of Belleville; one stepson, Douglas Newman of Nebraska; three nieces, Janet (and Larry) Gough, Susan (and John) Stumpf and Julie Wales; and one nephew, Jeff Gilbert.

He was a member of the Lincoln United Methodist Church.

Marvin graduated from the Atlanta High School in 1944.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the fund for a new van at The Christian Village or to the benevolent fund of the Illinois State Police.
