Virginia 'Gini' Higgins

[March 10, 2011]  LINCOLN -- Virginia M. "Gini" Higgins, 94, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at 12:55 p.m. at The Christian Village Nursing Home in Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 5 until 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Peasley Funeral Home in Lincoln. A rosary service will follow at 6:30.

A Mass of Christian burial for Mrs. Higgins will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jeffery G. Laible, the Rev. John Huy Pham and the Rev. Simon Lucas Taabu officiating.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Gini was born Oct. 17, 1916, in Lincoln. Her parents were William F. and Theresa Schmid Webster. She married Edward W. Higgins on April 6, 1953. He preceded her in death on June 23, 2009.

She is survived by her son, Michael Higgins (and fiancée Caroline Edwards) of Lincoln; one brother, R.K. Webster of Austin, Texas; one sister, Clarice "Rusti" Rohrer of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Reinhart of Lincoln.

She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Virgil L. French, and one brother, William F. Webster Jr.

She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1934, attended Lincoln College and worked at French & Son Dry Cleaners. In addition to helping on the farm, she worked in the registrar's office at Lincoln College and taught piano.

She was a parishioner and organist at Holy Family Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Lincoln Emblem Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Gini loved music and water in all its forms. She was an avid sailor, swimmer and ice skater. She served as director for "Learn to Swim" week at Lincoln Lakes, was a Mariner Scout leader and taught arthritis exercise classes at the former Holiday Inn pool for many years.
