[May 04, 2011]  ATLANTA -- James L. Thompson, 79, of Atlanta, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at 8:07 p.m. at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eminence Christian Church, rural Atlanta. Dr. L.C. Sutton will officiate.

Burial will be in Mountjoy Cemetery, rural Atlanta.

Mr. Thompson was employed by Caterpillar, Raymond Cotton Plumbing, GE and then retired from Cutler-Hammer after 39 years of employment.

He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952 to 1954 and in the Army Reserves for eight years.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1932, in Lincoln. His parents were Roy H. and Mona B. Bishop Thompson. He married Marian Renfrow on Nov. 27, 1954, at Eminence Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, of Atlanta; two daughters, Brenda (and Doug) Garey of Atlanta and Cathy (and Steve) Dreyer of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Clint Garey of Atlanta, Caleb Garey (and Justine Lowery) of Waynesville, Kate and Justin Dreyer of Atlanta; one great-grandchild, Tucker Garey of Waynesville; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Martin and Michael; and three sisters, Bernadine Houghton, Donnabelle Barton and Madeline Thompson.

He was a member of Eminence Christian Church, where he had served as a deacon and trustee; American Legion Post 341; and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Funeral Director

Jim graduated from Atlanta High School in 1949.

Memorials may be made to Eminence Christian Church or Atlanta Rescue Squad.
