For April, the LCHS Senior of the Month is Katherine Boss,
daughter of Brad Boss and Erica Meiners of Lincoln. Katherine's
school activities have included swim team, softball, Spanish Club,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Creative Writing Club, student
government and National Honor Society, among others. She is active
in community as well, including work with Relay for Life, Knights of
Columbus, American Legion, Lincoln Public Library and Carroll
Catholic School, among other volunteer efforts. She is planning on
marine biology and international studies as a college major, and she
plans to attend the University of Southern Mississippi. Logan County
Bank congratulates Katherine on her selection as LCHS Senior of the
Month for April.
For May, the LCHS senior of the month is Nathaniel Smith, son of Mitch
Smith and Teresa Oltmanns of Lincoln. Nathaniel's school activities have
included basketball, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Pep Club, L.E.A.F. Club,
D.A.R.E. role model and National Honor Society, among others. He is active in
the community as well, including work with Zonta, Lincoln/Logan Food Pantry,
Special Olympics, Junior Railers basketball and Together for Lincoln, among
other volunteer efforts. He is planning on sports management and business as a
college major, and he plans to attend Loras College. Logan County Bank
congratulates Nathaniel on his selection as LCHS Senior of the Month for May.
Logan County Bank is proud to sponsor Lincoln Community High School's Senior
of the Month/Year award and scholarship program. Each monthly winner receives a
$50 U.S. savings bond from Logan County Bank and is then eligible for a $1,500
scholarship awarded by the bank, to be used at the college of their choice.
The Hartsburg-Emden FFA was selected to receive a $250
Community Improvement Grant from Farm Credit Service. This grant
will be used for landscaping a portion of the Hartsburg downtown
area, where an old building was demolished.
John Hartman of the Lincoln office of Farm Credit Services presented the $250
grant check to Josiah Klokkenga, Hartsburg-Emden FFA president.

The Hartsburg-Emden FFA had their annual awards and recognition
program on Thursday, May 12. Officers installed for the 2011-2012
year were Josiah Klokkenga, president; Will Clark and Dusty Paulus,
co-vice presidents; Drew Wenninger, secretary; Chase Griffith,
treasurer; Danielle Hill and Mary Rankin, reporters; Dylan Swinford
and Hayden Vest, sentinels; Alli Watts and Sydney Jo Zamora,
historians; and Cody Anderson, Nathan Newby and Tommy Snyder,
student council representatives.
Kelsi Ubbenga was recognized with the Star Chapter FFA Degree,
the DeKalb Award and the Christopher Gehrke Memorial Award.
Recognized as Star Greenhands were Cole Baker, Cody Conrady, Dirk
Conrady, Noah Cross, Kaleb Hoerbert, Robby Meeker and Erin Rankin.
The Hartsburg-Emden FFA Alumni Scholarship was awarded to Karly
Anderson, Haylie Langley, Betsy Leesman and Kelsi Ubbenga.
Kelsi Ubbenga was recognized as a candidate for the State FFA
Degree and Josh Clark as a candidate for the American FFA Degree.
 The 84th annual alumni banquet of Hartsburg-Emden High
School will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, at the
Knights of Columbus Hall in Lincoln. This event will include dinner
catered by the K.C. Hall, recognitions, awards and fellowship.
Invitations to the banquet will be sent out in mid-May, with
RSVPs by June 3. Anyone who did not receive an invitation but would
like to attend the banquet may send a request to

Anniversary classes being honored this year are 1931, 1936, 1941,
1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996,
2001 and 2006, along with the seniors of 2011.
The winner of the "Wall of Fame" award will be selected and
announced at the banquet. This year's award will be in the category
of "distinguished alumni." Please mail nomination letters to Kent

Due to the rising costs of the alumni banquet, the association
will be accepting donations to help out with the cost of the event
and to continue funding the Alumni Scholarship. Donations are
payable to the Hartem Alumni Association and may be sent to Greg
Phillips, P.O. Box 283, Emden, IL 62635.
2011 officers of the alumni association are Kent Leesman,
president; Geoff Phillips, vice president; Lori Lessen, secretary;
Greg Phillips, treasurer; and Matt and Brooke Ballance,
corresponding secretaries.
