Leonard Batterton

[November 03, 2011]  ATLANTA -- Leonard Leon Batterton, 92, formerly of Atlanta, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at 5:10 p.m. at St. Clara's Manor in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Atlanta United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rob Roy officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery.

Arrangements are with Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home of Atlanta.

Mr. Batterton owned and operated Batterton Standard Service stations for over 50 years in Fairbury, Colfax and Atlanta. 

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from May 1941 through October 1945. 

He was born Sept. 22, 1919, in Colfax. His parents were Otto and Lesta Anna Gaddis Batterton. He married Iona Amdor on May 18, 1946, at the Osman Methodist Church in Osman.

He is survived by his wife, of Lincoln; one son, Norman (and Beth Hamlin) of Castalia, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Yaletta; four grandchildren, Lyn Ranea Harris of Atlanta, Laura (and Tim) O'Donnell of Atlanta, Leigh (and Travis) Demling of McLean and Sarah Batterton of Castalia, N.C.; and nine great-grandchildren, Shelby Batterton, Kalleigh Harris, Nick, Drew and Zach O'Donnell, and Logan, Shane, Gabe and Reid Demling.

He was preceded in death by one son, Len; one sister, Edna Pope; and two brothers, Vernon Batterton and Royce Batterton.

Leonard attended Colfax High School.

While in the Army, he achieved the rank of sergeant and graduated from the elite Platoon Leadership Combat Weapons Jungle Warfare service school in June 1943. He also played on the Army softball team. 

He was a member of the Atlanta United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 341 and a former Mason.

Funeral Director

He was also a "do or die" Cubs fan and coached many different sports teams over the years.

Leonard loved attending his sons', grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's athletic events. He is irreplaceable in their lives, and his absence now will be greatly felt.

Memorials may be made to the Atlanta United Methodist Church or the Atlanta Rescue Squad.
