Lincoln Daily News
welcomes letters of appreciation, information and
opinion on matters pertaining to the community.
Controversial issues:
As a
community we need to be able to talk openly about
matters that affect the quality of our lives. The
most effective and least offensive manner to get
your point across is to stick to the issue
and refrain from commenting on another person's
opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the
issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

To the editor: AFSCME 2073 is pleased with the
decision rendered by the Commission on Government Forecasting and
Accountability on Nov. 10. COGFA voted against Gov. Quinn's plan to
close Logan Correctional Center. Although the vote is nonbinding, it
is a step in the right direction.
Help is still needed to ensure that Logan Correctional Center is
not closed and over $73 million is not taken away from Lincoln and
Logan County. To continue the fight, we encourage people to once
again call their local legislators, the leadership of the House and
Senate, and Gov. Quinn's office and demand that money be allocated
to keep Logan open. The Legislature is slated to reconvene Nov. 29.
We would not be this close to keeping Logan open without the hard
work of AFSCME employees, the Lincoln/Logan County Chamber of
Commerce, Logan County Economic Development Corp., Mayor Keith
Snyder, Lincoln City Council and the Logan County Board. The
citizens of Logan County have also been key to this fight. They have
supported Logan Correctional Center by attending a rally at the
courthouse, calling legislators, committing over 8,000 signatures on
petitions and by having approximately 1,200 show up at the COGFA
hearing.
Thank you again to all those who have helped in this effort. We
ask that you continue your support.
