Study: Ill. ranks high in taxes on poor families

[November 17, 2011]  SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- A study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities ranked Illinois seventh in taxes for a two-parent family of four at the poverty line. That family would have owed the state $187 in income taxes last year.

Illinois was sixth in taxes owed by a single parent raising three children on poverty-level wages. That family would have owed $99.

Alabama had the highest tax bite for poor families in both categories.

The study found that most states don't apply income taxes to families living in poverty.
