[July 02, 2012]  As of Friday evening, Lincoln Park District director Marcia Greenslate said that the fireworks show scheduled for the evening of the July 4 at the park district will go on.

She said she is paying attention to the weather and the warnings that are currently issued, but will hold off as long as possible before making any kind of decision.

"We've had to cancel at least once in the past due to extreme dry. When we did, we waited for rain, then rescheduled. That is what we will do this time if we have to," Greenslate said.

In the meantime, there will be lots to do in Lincoln on the Fourth.

The annual children's old-fashioned walking parade will line up at Scully Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with judging at 9:30. The parade will start after the judging.

Parents are encouraged to accompany their children in the parade. Parents who do not walk in the parade can meet their children at the Lincoln Park District, where the parade will conclude and the winners will be announced.

The annual water balloon fight of the park district versus the Lincoln Fire Department will be immediately after the prize presentations for the walking parade.

Team Park District will include everyone who wishes to join in, with a special appearance expected by Mayor Keith Snyder. There is also a possibility that police Chief Ken Greenslate may show up.

The fire department will bring a fire truck, and the park district will have water balloons. This has always been a fun time, and everyone is guaranteed to go home soaking wet.

A new event scheduled for this year is a bags tournament.

The tournament will be on the Rec Center driving range, beginning at 6 p.m. Registration will begin at 5:15. Participants may sign up as a team, or individual players will be paired up to make teams. There is no entry fee. Prizes will be awarded for first- and second-place teams. For more information or to register in advance, contact tournament organizer Mark Tippett at 217-971-6079.

There will be concessions, a DJ and, of course, the fireworks at dusk. The American Legion color guard will be present for the national anthem as well.
