[May 14, 2012]  Physical therapist Julie Cross is the May Employee of the Month at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

She received her master's degree in physical therapy from St. Louis University and worked at Eureka Hospital as an outpatient and pediatric physical therapist prior to coming to ALMH four years ago.

"ALMH is a wonderful place to work," said Cross. "I have the best co-workers -- they are a joy to work with. Plus, I get the opportunity to interact with many people in my job as a PT. Our new rehab facility is beautiful, and it is a pleasure treating patients here."

Cross treats an average of 10 patients daily. Their diagnoses range from joint replacement recovery and muscle pain to sports injuries and balance issues.

"This is an excellent career choice and can be very rewarding when you help a person improve their quality of life," said Cross. "You must be on your feet most of the day and enjoy working with a variety of people. You do encounter something new every day."

To become a physical therapist, a bachelor's degree is required. Physical therapy programs, however, are now doctorate programs with about seven years of schooling. For a physical therapy assistant, an associate's degree is necessary. Physical therapists can work in hospitals, nursing homes, schools and sports medicine clinics.
