[September 01, 2012]  MOUNT PULASKI -- Tyler Urish, son of Dan and Jill Urish of Mount Pulaski, has been elected to the Student Senate at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Student government at SIUE strives to represent the student body in all aspects to promote campus life, further the interests of the student body and encourage students to develop leadership qualities. Student senators form the legislative branch of student government. They approve student organization funding through the student welfare and activity fee.

Each spring the student body elects 12 senators to service for the following academic year. Senators must serve weekly office hours and attend student government activities.

Urish is a junior political science major. During the spring semester, he taught a Chinese language class to elementary students through the Edwardsville YMCA after-school program, and over the summer he worked at Grant's Farm in St. Louis.

He is a 2010 graduate of Mount Pulaski High School.
