LCU volleyball wins 1 of 4 on weekend

[October 22, 2013]  WHITING, Ind. -- The Lincoln Christian University volleyball team traveled to Whiting, Ind., for the Crimson Wave invitational hosted by Calumet College of St. Joseph on Friday and Saturday. LCU came away with one win on the weekend against stiff competition, with the majority of teams competing from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

In the first match, LCU went up against Roosevelt University. LCU lost 1-3 with set scores of 10-25, 22-25, 25-22 and 20-25. Junior outside hitter Alicia Carson (Gobles, Mich./Bloomingdale High) led LCU with 13 kills in the match, while junior libero Emma Donnelly (Clinton/Clinton High) recorded 27 digs.

LCU took on the host, Calumet College of St. Joseph, in the second match. Able to pull away for a win in this match, LCU won 3-1 with set scores of 25-17, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-20. Senior Emily Sheley (Lincoln/Lincoln Community High) led the way for LCU with 17 kills. Senior setter Hannah Taylor (Mishawaka, Ind./Jimtown High) recorded 46 assists, and Donnelly had another outstanding game with 44 digs.

The third match saw LCU drop to Indiana University Kokomo 0-3 with set scores of 13-25, 27-29 and 18-25. Carson, Sheley and freshman Abbey Akre (Newark/Newark Community High) each recorded seven kills. Donnelly recorded 24 digs on the match.

In the final match, LCU dropped a tough match to Cincinnati Christian University in five sets. Scores were 27-29, 26-24, 19-25, 26-24 and 5-15. Carson led again with 16 kills and 13 digs. Donnelly recorded an outstanding 60 digs on the match.

LCU will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to take on Benedictine University at Springfield at 7 p.m.
