Friday, John Hartman and
members of his staff from Farm Credit Services wrapped up their week
of "Meals in the Field" in observance of Farm Safety Week. The FCS group delivered fried chicken dinners to the Rick Boyer farm at
noon on Friday. Everyone sat down, enjoyed a meal, a cold
drink and pie for dessert before heading back to the field to work
on the corn harvest.
Rick Boyer calls himself a
"midsize" farmer in Logan County. He along with his dad, Earl,
and brother Mike raise corn and soybeans in the rural
Hartsburg-Emden area. At the Boyer farm, the corn harvest is
well underway. Boyer said the crew starts their day about 6
a.m. and runs until dark every day. His brother Mike added
that in a day they can harvest about 100 acres.
Boyer said this is not a bad
year for the corn harvest. He's considering that his yields
will come in above average, much better than what he saw last year. Like many farmers in the area, he is a little concerned about what
the soybean crop will look like. He noted that in his part of
the county, there was zero rain the entire month of August, and that
would have been a crucial time for pod development and filling. He is predicting right now that yes, he's going to have a soybean
crop, but he won't be surprised if the yields come in below average.
