The
remediation process on the city-owned Third Street
property next to the Logan County Department of Public
Health is now completed. The next step in the
reclamation project will be to prepare and seed the
vacant lot.
The Third Street property is the site of the old Lincoln
gasification electric plant. Due to the methods used at
the turn of the 20th century to provide electricity to
the citizens of Lincoln, the soil was found to be
contaminated with Benzine. Common Wealth Edison and
Nicor Gas were held responsible for the contamination
because the two companies had utilized the plant at one
time to deliver city utilities.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency mandated
that the two companies would have to remediate the
contaminated soil at no expense to the city of Lincoln.
When the project is completed, the land will belong to
the city of Lincoln for future use or development as it
sees fit.
