              Committee
did a good job handling current street repair projects
              11-16-00
              To
              the editor:
              A
big thanks and a pat on the back are due the Streets and Alleys
Committee and the entire City Council for the direction it has
taken in the latest street repair work.
              In
the past, many major street repairs were done by bidding out the
projects. This year there were plans being made to bid out 1.3
million dollars worth of road work. This plan did not use any of
the resources available from our own Streets and Alley Department.
              Then
the Streets and Alleys Chairman George Mitchell called a meeting
with his committee and reworked the issue. The committee decided
to put to good use all the equipment and expertise of our Street
and Alley Department in conjunction with outside contractors. This
decision ended up getting more streets repaired for less money.
Because of good committee work and the willingness of Streets and
Alleys Superintendent Don Osborne to take on larger projects, this
              was a win/win situation.
              There
is an important lesson to be learned here that can be used in all
facets of running the city. As Mayor I will use the Committees and
the Department Heads to their best capacity.
              A
special thanks to George Mitchell and his Streets and Alleys
Committee, Don Osborne and the Street Department and the entire
City Council for getting all the Road Rehabilitation done this
              year.
              This
new direction should be the approach that the city uses in the
              future.

              Dear
              Editor:
              Looks
like it may already be time for Bush to alter his campaign mantra.
'I don't trust the federal government, I trust the people' has
              become, before he's even considered the president-elect, 'I don't
trust the federal government <unless I have to go to court>,
              I trust the people <unless they're hand-counting ballots>.'
Compare this to Al Gore, who constantly reiterated on the stump
how he wanted to fight for the people. And he is certainly
              fighting.
              I'm
not sure that even if Bush is elected that I could consider him my
president. If the balloting had been done properly in Florida he
would've lost. His brother being governor of this befuddled state
is slowly becoming suspect. His camp spews a constant stream of
absurdities, the single most laughable statement pointing up Ford
and Nixon as paragons of virtue for the way they stepped aside in
close elections. He himself signed a bill allowing manual hand
counts in Texas' close elections. He began establishing a
transition team without waiting for any final count. His camp
decried the thought of taking the Florida election to court and
then was the first to do so. The list goes on and on. Part of me
feels bad for Bush. It must be tough going. But the other part of
me, the gut instinct part, shudders at the idea of a well-to-do
frat boy who hasn't ever worked for much of anything in life
(beyond building a baseball stadium) getting a free ride all the
              way to the White House.
              Sincerely,
              Guy

              Dear
              Lincoln Daily News Staff,
              First
I want to thank you all for creating a webpage that keeps so many
Lincolnites up to date on the happenings in our town.  As a
college student at Illinois State University, it is a
wonderful/easy way to keep up with Lincoln news while at
              school.
              I
have just one complaint with your paper.  It is in the area
of sports coverage.  I am not talking about Lincoln
sports.  You have done an excellent job following sports in
the Lincoln/Logan County area.  I am talking about college
sports.  It was very nice to see stories on Lincoln's Andy
King, Steph Reichle, and Brian Cook.  However, my question
is:  Why does coverage of the University of Illinois football
team make the front page when only 30 miles away in Normal,
Lincolnite Andy King and his Redbirds won their football game in
double-overtime?  I'm not saying that you shouldn't cover
Illini football(or any other U of I sports), but shouldn't you
have equal coverage of area teams?
              I'm
in the stands at every ISU game supporting these fine
athletes and I know that a lot of Lincoln residents make
the trip to Normal every weekend to do the same.  I
would like to invite you to come see Steph Reichle, Andy
King, and soon to be Redbird Gregg Alexander compete here at
Illinois State.  I assure you that you'll walk away having
seen a good game, been fully entertained, and have a good
story that will interest many of your readers.
              Sincerely,
              Brock
