Holiday
theft
[NOV.
29, 2000]
Over
the holiday weekend, a house on Westminster Drive was broken into.
Approximately 20 jewelry items, over $300 in cash and a laptop
computer were stolen while the owners were away. There are no
suspects yet.
The
Lincoln Police Department has some suggestions for residents and
business owners during the holiday season. If you will be away
visiting family and friends for a while, let your neighbors know
so that they can keep an eye on your house for you. Never leave
gifts and valuables in open view whether in your house or car.
This is an advertisement to thieves. Use light timers because they
give the appearance of occupancy. Any other timers, such as for
the television or radio, add to the effect. One of the most
important things to remember in the holiday rush is to "take
a little extra time" and lock things up.
The
main thing LPD suggests business owners do to reduce theft is to
greet customers at the door. Someone intent on stealing might
reconsider if he believes that the store clerk can identify him
later. Again, keep things locked. Jewelry dealers in particular
should have only one item out at a time.
