Despite
making only 20 of 44 free throws and being out-rebounded 53-40, Lincoln College
men's basketball team posted a 90-82 victory over Black Hawk East of Kewanee at
Lincoln Wednesday night. The victory runs the Lynx record to 7-2 for the season.
Coach
B. J. McCullum said, "We came out and played hard. We took an early
lead and then started committing dumb fouls and let them back in the game.
Because of the fouls we had to go to the bench early and often."
Four
Lincoln College players reached double figures, led by Marlon Brooks with
20. Also contributing double figures for coach McCullum were Eric
Crockrell with 17, Maurice Shurney with 16 and Brian Moffitt with 15.

LCC
Angels bag first win of the season
|
[NOV.
29, 2000]
Led
by former LCHS Lady Railers Brittany Robbins and Steph Urton and a magnificent
game by Michelle O'Malley, the LCC Angels sent Principia packing 66-52 last
night here in Lincoln. The raucous crowd was excited by the win, but that paled
in comparison to the looks of satisfaction on the Lincoln girls’ faces!
Lincoln grabbed their first halftime lead of the year at 27-25 and withstood a
couple of Principia runs late in the game. After Steph Urton returned from a leg
injury late in the second half, she controlled the offense, making sure that the
ball got into the hands of Robbins and O'Malley down the stretch.
Lincoln
Christian College had six 3-pointers during the game, all made by Robbins. Added
to six other field goals and two free throws, Robbins made 32 points — almost
half of the team’s total! O’Malley made almost a third of the team’s
points with six field goals and six free throws, for a total of 18 points. Urton
made five field goals for 10 points. Spiering, Davis and Flaherty each made one
2-point field goal. In total, the Angels had 26 field goals and eight free
throws.
Merrill
made all of Principia’s five 3-pointers in the game and almost half of the
team’s total points. The team made 21 field goals and five free throws to
yield 52 points.
Next up for the
LCC ladies is a tournament this weekend in Nashville, Tenn.

Lincoln
College vs. Three Rivers
[NOV.
27, 2000]
Three
Rivers Community College handed the Lincoln College men's basketball team its
second defeat of the season with an 87-64 setback in the championship game of
the Three Rivers tournament at Popular Bluffs, Mo., Saturday night. The loss
drops the high-flying Lynx to 6-2 for the season.
Three
Rivers used the 3-point shot to a big advantage as they hit on 10 of 22 shots
for 46 percent. Overall the hosts made 29 of 61 field goal attempts for 48
percent. Lincoln was limited to 38 percent shooting on 24 of 64 attempts. The
Lynx were 4 of 16 from 3-point land.
Marlon
Brooks paced the Lincoln College attack with 16 points while Jerron Hobson added
12 and Maurice Shurney tallied 11.
Three
Rivers was led by Stanlin Ortiz with 21 points. Three Rivers had a 49-35
rebounding edge in the contest.
Coach
B. J. McCullum stated, "I thought Three Rivers’ defensive intensity and
their effort on the offensive boards really hurt us. We must become more
disciplined in our half-court offense and our shot selection. Against
other teams we have been able to force them out of their offense, and we have
been able to score in transition. Unfortunately, against Three Rivers and
Southeastern (our two losses) we have not been able to force the turnovers and
get in the open floor. Our effort was very good throughout the tournament, and
these guys took the loss hard. Hopefully we can get back in practice and
work a little harder on the offensive end."
Two
of the Lincoln College players, Marlon Brooks and Maurice Shurney, were named to
the all-tournament team.
Lincoln
College (64) — Jerron Hobson 5-11-0-0-12; Jay Bates 4-11-0-3-8; Ryan
