Council
hears reports on bird problems, leaf-burning issues
[SEPT.
13, 2000] Problems
caused by flocks of birds and piles of autumn leaves came up for
discussion at Tuesday night’s work session of the Lincoln City
Council. A solution seems to be in hand for the Mayfair residents
who have been plagued by huge flocks of grackles, but the problem of
the piles of fallen leaves that will face some residents in October
remains on the agenda.

Miller
remembers high school days in New Holland
[SEPT.
13, 2000]
Don
Miller remembers a lot about the former New Holland Community High School. He
spent a total of 32 years there, four as a student and the other 28 as an ag
teacher. "I probably spent a longer time in that building than anyone
else," he says. He will be one of many area residents with ties to New
Holland who will be attending the village’s 125th anniversary celebration the
weekend of Sept. 29 and 30 and Oct. 1.

"Remarkable
Women Of The Twentieth Century"
[SEPT.
13, 2000]
More
than any other time in history, the 20th century has witnessed the emergence of
women as a force for societal and cultural change. In their book
"Remarkable Women Of The Twentieth Century," authors Kristen Golden
and Barbara Findlen chose 100 of the most important women and have chronicled
their many achievements and contributions. In the introduction the authors write
that "in the major events of the twentieth century, as well as in everyday
life, the contributions of women are profound — and too often unsung."
The selection of these women is by the authors’ own admission neither
exhaustive nor exclusive. It is, however, a representation of the unprecedented
contributions of women and their influence on our world.
