Lincoln’s
wooden bat team splits doubleheader 4-12, 8-3
[SEPT.
18, 2000] Lincoln
split a doubleheader with TBA in the high school Wooden Bat League
Sunday. TBA consists of high school players from Metamora, Midwest
Central, Jacksonville, Pekin, Normal West and Illinois Valley.
Lincoln’s two-week layoff due to rain clearly affected their early
play in game one, a 4-12 loss. TBA scored six runs in the first two
innings off three Lincoln errors and four walks. Blake Schoonover
took the loss, although he allowed only one earned run in two
innings.
|
Three
more Lincoln errors were committed in innings three and four, when
TBA scored six runs (three earned) off Ryan Williams. Jamison Sheley
and Justin Dedman held TBA scoreless and hitless in the last three
innings, but the insurmountable damage was already done
.
Lincoln
couldn’t get on track offensively. Their four runs were scored on
four hits (by Andy Knopp, Andrew Bartman, Sheley and Aaron Matson).
Pekin’s Jeff Simonson threw three innings for the win, allowing
only one hit and one run.
The
second game was a different story. Lincoln seemed more comfortable
in their playing shoes, committing only one error and scratching out
an 8-3 win. Starter Matt Boyer notched the victory, facing a minimum
of six batters in two innings. Boyer’s effort was ironically
helped by a lead-off double in the second inning that saw Midwest
Central’s Justin Gorkin gunned down trying for third by throws
from center fielder Dedman and a strong relay by shortstop Knopp.
TBA
threatened a tenuous 3-1 Lincoln lead in the fourth inning, when
Chris Phillips relieved Josh McDaniel. Phillips took the mound with
the bases loaded and no outs. His first two batters hit comeback
grounders that allowed force outs at home. He then ended the threat
with a strikeout. Phillips held TBA scoreless and hitless in innings
five and six. Although TBA scored twice on Jamison Sheley in the
final inning, Sheley squelched any comeback hopes by striking out
Simonson for the last out.

Lincoln
had only five hits in the second game, in part because TBA pitchers
were stingy throwing strikes, walking or hitting 15 Lincoln batters.
McDaniel drew three walks and Knopp four. Matt Boyer’s nine-pitch
at-bat for one of his walks illustrates, however, that Lincoln
hitters were tenacious in making their opponents throw strikes.
Lincoln’s
Phillips had five RBIs, with three coming on a seventh inning
base-clearing double to deep left field. Dedman and John Peters
contributed two hits apiece, and seven different Lincoln players
scored runs.
Lincoln’s
record is now 3-1, with the next game in Quincy on Oct. 1.

Lincoln
suffers loss to Lanphier
[SEPT.
16, 2000] Something
happened to the Lincoln Railers football team on the way to the end
of the second quarter last night. After an impressive opening
scoring drive, a crushing defensive stop and a breakaway run for a
second score, the Lincoln Railer football team fell apart. It was
midway through the second quarter and, for the first time in recent
memory, the Railers were up 13-0. Lincoln's Sam Moore was racking up
the yards. Lanphier's much heralded Brandy Granderson was being shut
down by the Railer defense, led by Billy Barton, Nick Shaw and a
host of others. That was the first quarter and a half. That was the
good news. It was mostly all down hill from there. Mistakes on
special teams led to the Railers turning the ball over deep in
their own territory on the next three possessions. While the defense
played tough with their backs to the wall, they were unable to stop
the Lions' quickness, and when the buzzer sounded at the half the
score stood at Lanphier 14, Lincoln 13.
From the Railer
sidelines, the second half was ugly. On the crucial opening drive,
Lanphier scored quickly and then kept scoring and scoring until the
night ended with the courageous Railers falling to 0-4, losing to
Lanphier 36-13. The Railer offense never mounted a serious drive in
the second half. Jimmy Babbs did some fearless running up the middle
in the second half, but with the Lanphier defense swarming Sam
Moore, there was too little offense for the Railers to score again.
In the second half, the Railer defense once again seemed always to
be backed up near their own end of the field. Brandy Granderson and
the other quick Lanphier backs repeatedly found themselves in the
end zone.
Once again, the
Railers showed determination and never-ending effort but were
unable to overcome crucial mistakes in their loss. When the Railers
put together four quarters like their first quarter last night, the
team will find itself in the victory column. But not last night. The
Railers will prepare this week to face Jacksonville in its
Homecoming game on Friday night.
