James
A. J. Baker, 78, of Mount Pulaski died on Saturday, April 7, 2001,
at 4:15 p.m., at Vonderlieth Living Center in Mount Pulaski.
The
funeral will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski, with Bill Shanle and John Robertson
officiating.
Graveside
services will be at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, at Mount Pulaski
Cemetery.
Visitation
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Baker
was a retired heating and cooling design engineer.
He
was born in Buffalo, Mo., on Nov. 30, 1922, to Walter and Oma
(Cowan) Baker. He never married.
Baker
is survived by one brother, Don (Margaret) Baker of Mount Pulaski;
three sisters, Freda (Wallace) McGee of Mount Pulaski, Joyce (Jack)
Scroggin of Mount Pulaski and Rosanna (Jack) Irving of Springfield;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
He
was preceded in death by both his parents and one brother, Bertrum
Baker.
Baker
was a member of the Mount Pulaski American Legion.

Evelyn
Johnson, 88, of Peoria, formerly of Washington (Ill.), died at 6:45
p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at Proctor Homes in Peoria.
Graveside
funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, at
Union Cemetery, Lincoln. The Rev. John Throop will officiate.
A
memorial service will be at a later date at Proctor Home.
Visitation
will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, at Kerrigan Funeral
Home in Lincoln.
Mrs.
Johnson was a homemaker, and according to her family, she was “a
loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.”
She
was born Nov. 25, 1912, in Athens to John and Edith (Turnbull) Knox.
She married James L. Johnson on March 15, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo.
Surviving
Mrs. Johnson are her husband, of Peoria; two daughters, J. Elizabeth Singer of Naples, Fla.,
and Barbara E. Johnson of Harwich, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
One
brother preceded her in death.
She
was a member of Washington Presbyterian Church in Washington and a
former member of Methodist Hospital Service League in Peoria.

Swanberg
Peggy
S. Swanberg, 50, of Lincoln died at 5:56 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001,
at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Funeral
services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Tom Gerdts officiating.
Burial
will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lincoln.
Visitation
will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Ms.
Swanberg was employed in management at GTE.
She
was born Sept. 27, 1950, in Clinton to Budd and Marjorie (Thompson)
Wilkinson.
Surviving
family members are one son, Samuel W. Swanberg of Bloomington; her
mother, Marjorie Hamilton of Lincoln; her stepfather, Charles
Hamilton of Lincoln; three sisters, Amy (Stuart) Wilson of Portage,
Mich., Celia (Jose) Aguilar of San Francisco, Calif., and Karen
(Joe) Udwari of Silver Spring, Md.; and two stepsisters, Angie
(Robert) Hentrich of Chillicothe and Christina (Russell) Ashbaugh of
Atlanta.
She
was preceded in death by her father, Budd Wilkinson, and one sister,
Rebbeca Wilkinson.
She was a member of
Lincoln Christian Church.

Ross
Charles
A. Ross, 92, of Lincoln died at 6:20 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at
Maple Ridge Care Centre in Lincoln.
Funeral
services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Kerrigan Funeral
Home in Lincoln.
Burial
will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.
Visitation
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Ross
was a crane operator in Gary, Ind., for many years. He retired in
1969.
He
was born Oct. 24, 1908, in Lincoln to Joseph and Deliah (Derrick)
Ross. He married Sarah Huskey in Lincoln in 1934. She died in 1991.
Surviving
family members are one son, James Ross of Chicago; 12 grandchildren;
and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He
was also preceded in death by two sons, one grandson, one
great-grandson, three brothers and six sisters.
He
was an avid fisherman and gardener.
