Theodore
"Ted" Talbert Sommers, 90, of Lincoln died at 1:28 p.m.
Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Aspen Ridge Care Centre in Decatur.
Funeral
services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Larry Maffett officiating.
Burial
will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.
Visitation
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Sommers
farmed in the New Holland and Beason areas until he retired in 1987.
He
was born June 15, 1910, in Greenview to Henry and Naomi Ruth (Heimbach)
Sommers. He married Isabelle Mosier in Lincoln on Jan. 24, 1939.
Surviving
Sommers are his wife, of Lincoln; one son, LeRoy "Zeke"
Sommers of Lincoln; one daughter, Jean (Ray) Boyd of Bloomington;
five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He
was the last of his immediate family. His parents, eight brothers
and one son, Richard Leo, preceded him in death.
He
was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lincoln and the
Logan County Farm Bureau.
He
played for the St. Louis Browns baseball team in 1933-34. He was an
avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Memorials
may be made to First United Methodist Church of Lincoln or to
Alzheimer’s disease research.

George
E. Allen died on Sunday, April 15, 2001, in Tuscan, Ariz.
Graveside
services at Mason City Cemetery will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April
20, with the Rev. William Boyce officiating. There will not be any
visitation. Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City is in charge of
arrangements.
Allen
was previously employed at Caterpillar in Morton for nine years.
He
was born to Calvin and Doris (Sutton) Allen on April 17, 1952, in
Lincoln.
He
was married in Havana on May 31, 1973, to Teresa Jones. Later
remarried, she is now Teresa Bitner.
Allen
is survived by his father, Calvin Allen of San Jose; one daughter,
Terra Nelsen of Greenview; three grandchildren; four brothers, Gene
(Sandy) Allen of Clinton, Bernie Allen of Clarksville, Tenn., Ted
(Deb) Allen of Lincoln and Randy (Denise) Allen of San Jose; and
four sisters, Alberta (Dean) Hunter and Marsha (Dennis) O’Donoghue
of Lincoln, Pam (Tom) Cook of Hopedale, and Gloria (Rick) Shaffer of
McLean.
He
was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Allen, and one son, Chad
Allen.
Memorials
can be made to the family, in care of First State Bank of Mason
City, to help with the funeral expenses.

Helena
"Sis" Hurley, 84, of Lincoln died at 6:04 a.m. Wednesday,
April 18, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Funeral
services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln.
Burial
will be in Union Cemetery, Lincoln.
Visitation
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs.
Hurley worked at Stetson China Factory and Lincoln Bottle Factory.
She
was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Elkhart to Charles H. and Jesse Mae (DeFrates)
Sloan. She married Ralph A. Newberry on Sept. 10, 1938, in Lincoln.
He died Sept. 13, 1944. She married Claude C. Hurley in February
1946 in Lincoln. He died Oct. 19, 1946.
Surviving
are one daughter, Sandy Weakley of Lincoln; two sons, Jerry R.
(Brenda) Newberry of Lincoln and Larry L. (Doody) Newberry of
Lincoln; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers,
Stephen "Bud" (Martha) Sloan of Hartsburg and Charles
"Chuck" (Mary Ann) Sloan of Lincoln; and five sisters,
Margaret Newberry, Gladys Aper, Hope (Wendell) Klockenga, Evelyn
(Edgar) Logan and Helen Singley, all of Lincoln.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, one infant son
and one infant granddaughter.

"Rose" E. Biggs, 40, of Lincoln died at 3:10 a.m. Sunday,

Mrs.
Biggs was a homemaker.
She
was born Nov. 23, 1960, in Limestone, Maine, to Glenn and Shirley (Gillum)
Gill. She married Milton "Lee" L. Biggs in Lincoln on July
31, 1981.
Surviving
Mrs. Biggs are her husband, of Lincoln; one son, Jeremy Lee Biggs of
Lincoln; one daughter, Lisa Marie Biggs of Clinton; her parents, of
Lincoln; two brothers, Brian Gill of Swansea and Glenn Gill Jr. of
Elizabethtown, Ky.; one sister, Pamela Johnson of Beason; and
several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.
She
was preceded in death by one son, Derek; one sister, Shirlene; one
brother, Jeffrey; and her grandparents.
She
was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lincoln.
She
was a 1978 graduate of Lincoln Community High School.

Roy
J. Slack, 77, of Lincoln, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Leesburg
Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Fla.

Slack
retired from Lincoln Developmental Center, where he was a barber.
He
was born Jan. 29, 1924, in Newton to Henry M. and Mabel C. (Wiles)
Slack. He married Marjorie Heinzel on Sept. 9, 1942, in Lincoln. She
died April 5, 1984. He married Edith J. Goddard Webb on Aug. 6,
1998, in Lincoln.
Surviving
Slack are his wife, Edith, of Lincoln; four sons, Lloyd Slack, David
(Sandy) Slack, Myron (Gail) Slack and Dan Slack, all of Lincoln; one
daughter, Billie Jean Foster of Tinley Park; three stepsons, Joseph
Morris Webb of Riverside, Calif., John David (Judy) Webb of
Oceanside, Calif., and James Craig (Betsy) Webb of Indianapolis,
Ind.; one stepdaughter, Joy Sue (Rick) Blazek of Springfield; one
brother, Clarence (Lois) Slack of Pekin; 13 grandchildren and 11
stepgrandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren and six
step-great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie, and two sisters,
Mary Sullivan and Clarine Wilson.
He
was affiliated with Lincoln Christian Church and with Leesburg
Christian Church in Leesburg, Fla.
He
was member of Friendship Corner Class senior group and Men’s Club
of First Christian Church.
