Thelma Keith

Thelma Irene Keith, 83 of Mason City, passed on Friday, November 30 at the Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Mrs. Keith was born to Artie and Ada (Brownfield) Huffman on June 14, 1918, in Mason City.  Her first husband, Marion Liesman preceded her in death.  She married Donald Keith in Mason City, December 28, 1952.  She is survived by two sisters, Ella Rea Depue, Seattle, Washington and Ruby Imig, Pekin. 

Mrs. Keith was a homemaker and partner in Nashville Sound Country Opry, formerly of Mason City.   She was a member of Mason City Christian Church.

Services for Mrs. Keith will be held Monday December 3, 10 a.m. at Mason City Christian Church with Rev. Dustin Fulton officiating.  Visitation will be 5 – 7 p.m. Sunday, December 2 at Hurley Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Mason City Area Nursing Home.

 


Dwight Bailey

Dwight Henry Bailey, 95, of Lincoln, formerly of Mount Pulaski and Springfield, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at St. Clara’s Manor.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Mount Pulaski Cemetery, Mount Pulaski.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Bailey worked as a draftsman at Allis-Chalmers in Springfield before his retirement.

He was born Aug. 4, 1906, in Nashua, Iowa, to James and Eva Myers Bailey. He married Amelia Louise Klotz on June 23, 1929, in Mount Pulaski. She died Jan. 20, 1999.

Surviving are one son, James (and wife Vi) Bailey of Lincoln; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Fern Greenslate of Decatur.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Springfield and the Astronomy Club of Springfield.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Geneva May

Geneva L. May, 88, of Lincoln died at 3:10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at St. Clara’s Manor.

Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Tom Gerdts officiating.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. May was a retired practical nurse who had worked at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, St. John’s Hospital and St. Clara’s Hospital. She also did private duty nursing in homes of many area residents.

She was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Dalton City to Arthur and Maude Nelhiser Wollums. She married Carl May on Nov. 12, 1930, in Sullivan. He died Feb. 27, 1976.

Surviving are two sons, Donald "Pete" (and wife Judy) May of Lincoln and Gary (and Vicki) May of Hartsburg; one daughter, Connie (and Robert) Madigan of Lincoln; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, in Decatur, Darrel "Duke" (and Betty) Wollums and Eldon (and Pauline) Wollums; and two sisters, in Maroa, Millie Wollums and Faye (and Stanton) Malone.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

She was a member of Decatur Christian Church.

Memorials may be made to St. Clara’s Manor or to the donor’s choice.

Julia Durst

Julia B. Durst, 78, of Indian Lake Estates, Fla., formerly of Homer and Elkhart, died at 9:35 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Florida.

Her funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Dan Wissmann officiating.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Mrs. Durst, a registered nurse, worked at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield and Carle Hospital in Urbana.

She served in the U.S. Army Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II.

She was born Sept. 13, 1923, in Elkhart to Everett and Louise Gluick Bock. She married Lester L. "Coogie" Durst on Sept. 19, 1948, in Lincoln.

Surviving Mrs. Durst are her husband, of Indian Lake Estates, Fla.; one daughter, Debra D. (and husband Thomas F.) Mullins III of Milford, Del; one grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lake Wells, Fla., and a past member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln.

She was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi, a past member of the American Legion in Homer and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Homer.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lincoln.

Lyle Bair

Lyle R. Bair, 85, of Easton died at 5:35 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Mason City Area Nursing Home, Mason City.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City.

Burial, with military rites, will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Havana.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Bair retired from Caterpillar in East Peoria after 30 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was born March 19, 1916, in Chandlerville to Edward R. and Catherine Ann Norton Bair. He married Marian Kolvis Henninger on Nov. 21, 1948, in Easton. She died Jan. 7, 1996.

Surviving are two sons, Gary (and wife June) Bair of Mason City and stepson Larry (and Nettie) Kolvis of Easton; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was a member of Chandlerville Christian Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Midwest Kidney Center, East Peoria.

 


Russell Leonard

Russell Leonard, 89, of Lincoln died at 4:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Christian Village in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at First United Methodist Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Larry Maffett and the Rev. James McClary officiating.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Arrangements are being handled by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Leonard farmed for 50 years in the Lincoln and Hartsburg area.

He was born April 15, 1912, in Atlanta to Bert R. and Ethel Green Leonard. He married Doris C. Poppenga on June 2, 1940, in Lincoln. She died Aug. 2, 1988.

Surviving are three daughters, Judith (and husband Larry) Bellamy of Normal, Carolyn (and Ron) Fehring of Springfield and Virginia (and Robert) Greer of Springfield; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, LaVara Moore of Lincoln; and two brothers, Herbert (and Melba) Leonard of Springfield, Mo., and Wilbur (and Evelyn) Leonard of Ludington, Mich.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Harold.

A devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Lincoln, he was a volunteer for the food pantry and a member of the Methodist Men’s Club, Men’s Prayer Fellowship and the Home Builders Class.

Memorials may be made to his church or to the Christian Village Alzheimer’s Unit.
