July 4 activities lined up at Lincoln Park District

The Fourth of July promises to be a great day of fun at your Lincoln Park District.  We begin the day with a fireman’s water fight; registration is at 8 a.m., and the event begins at 9 a.m.  We expect several teams from the neighboring community.  We encourage you to come on out and cheer them on.

Lincoln Baseball Association will host the all-star baseball games beginning at 11 a.m.  Teams made up of coaches and parents will play a game after the Bronco League.  It will be interesting (not to mention entertaining) to see if body and spirit team up in these advanced players.

The swimming pool will open for the young people at 1 p.m., with Splashapalooza scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.  Relay races, inner tube races, diving for pennies and much more is planned.  Admission is only $1, and the pool will close at 5 p.m.

Games for children and adults will start at 6 p.m. Children’s games will include races, relays and contests with prizes being awarded.  Games for adults will be hosted on the driving range.  Prizes for the longest drive, putting, chipping and "bean the cart" will be given.  To play "bean the cart," we place a bull’s-eye on the golf cart, drive the cart about 100 yards, and you get five balls to try to hit the cart as it drives back and forth on the driving range.

Concession stands will be available. There will be music by DJ John Plut, and, of course, it would not be the Fourth of July without the fireworks, which will begin at dusk.  Our many thanks to the Lincoln Fireworks Committee for their hard work.

Once again Immanuel Lutheran Church will host a bake sale, along with soft drinks. They invite you to use their lawn for watching the fireworks and offer their restroom facilities as well.

Historical sites and places of interest

Heritage In Flight Museum open on weekends

A little-known historical site full of large and small treasures sits on the outskirts of town on the Logan County Airport property. The Heritage In Flight Museum building itself is a part of history. It is a remnant of Camp Ellis, located west of Havana, which was the largest military training and prisoner-of-war camp in the United States during World War II. After the war the camp was closed and the buildings were sold. Logan County Airport is fortunate to have one of the few remaining structures from Camp Ellis.

Several historic items are found outside at the airport, including the rotating beacon, the green-and-white light that identifies the airport location to pilots flying at night. Before being moved to Logan County Airport, it was part of the lighted airway system that the airmail pilots in the 1920s used to navigate at night. The one that now resides here was originally located between Lincoln and Atlanta and provided a bright signal for Charles Lindbergh when he flew the airmail route between St. Louis and Chicago.

While outside you can also view a number of aircraft that are on display from various time periods.

Moving to the inside, you find that the Heritage in Flight Museum is filled with items of aviation history from the military and civilian branches of flying and from the earliest days of open-cockpit biplanes to the latest jets. Veterans who reside in Logan County have donated much of what the museum has. Families from the community have donated items that belonged to our war heroes, revealing special sentiments, symbolism and forgotten practices that held a community together in war times. Other items offer a look at early technology such as the airplane and ship radios. Of the thousands of items in the museum, each can be said to teach us something about our past. Visitors can relive history through the numerous displays, mostly grouped in wartime periods, and gain a strong sense of patriotism while studying military displays throughout the building.

A guided tour is recommended to get the most from these displays. The volunteers are both knowledgeable and passionate about their subject matter and will bring to light little-known nuances that make the displays fascinating.

The museum is always interested in adding items of aviation history. Its greatest need, however, is for more volunteers to help in the guardianship of this important gateway to Lincoln and Logan County.

The museum requires lots of care and maintenance. Members are always looking for interested people of all ages to help care for it, share their interests and preserve a bit of aviation history.

Heritage In Flight Museum is operated by an all-volunteer, non-profit organization: Heritage-In-Flight, Inc. You are invited to come meet the members and sit in on their meetings anytime. Meetings take place at 1 p.m. the first Saturday of each month in the terminal meeting room.

The museum is a great resource to educate our youth about our aeronautical and military past and shares the wealth of military traditions from a community and national perspective. Schools, youth groups and families are welcome.

Entertainment

Concerts in the Park

The annual summer Concerts in the Park take place on Sunday evenings at Latham Park, one block north of the historic courthouse square in Lincoln. The concerts begin at 7 p.m. People attending are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs or a blanket and enjoy the free entertainment.

Stone County Ramblers will perform on July 8.  They are an all-acoustic string band with a repertoire of bluegrass, traditional gospel and old-time country tunes.  The group traces its roots to Jim Birkey and his two sons, Jim and Jason of Hopedale.  All three sing and play guitar.  The Birkeys were later joined by their neighbors, Darin and Barb Rexroat.  Darin plays bass and Barb provides some vocal work.  Non-Hopedale residents who have joined the aggregation include five-string banjo wizard Rance Fouts of Pekin and Lincoln resident Dan Tackett, who sings and plays guitar, fiddle and mandolin.  Fouts, incidentally, also performs with the Lincoln-based acoustic group Farmer's Daughter.  Besides performing at benefits and private parties, the Stone County Ramblers have become a monthly staple at Now & Then, a restaurant in Hopedale.  They are sponsored by Keystone Risk Management and Puritan Springs Bottled Water.

Beans and Such and Family Custom Cleaners and Laundry are sponsoring the July 15 concert.  The Nostalgics will delight the young and young at heart with music from the Roaring ’20s to the post-war ’40s. You'll be "In the Mood" after an evening of enjoyable entertainment.

Angel Spiccia and Friends will perform on July 22.  Spiccia is an accomplished vocalist and has performed several times at The Restaurant at the Depot.  Her repertoire includes jazz and standards.  The group is sponsored by Bassi Construction and The Tropics Restaurant.

Paul and Win Grace will make a return appearance on July 29.  The Grace duo performed last year and were a special request of their sponsors, Prairie Years and Lincoln Public Library.  Paul and Win perform on a number of instruments as well as vocalize.  Their folk tunes tell the story and will conclude the concert season with a happy ending.

The Concerts in the Park series is coordinated by Main Street Lincoln and the Lincoln Area Music Society.  In addition to the individual concert sponsors, patrons supporting the season include J.M. Abbott and Associates, Bassi Construction, Century Dental Center, CILCO, The Courier, Graue Inc., David and Mary Lanterman, and Pacesetter Financial Group.  In-kind services are provided by Lincoln Music Center and the Logan County Board.
