David Barnhart to speak at
Good Shepherd on Sunday

[JUNE 19, 2001]  David R. Barnhart of Melbourne, Fla., director of Abiding Word Ministries and pastor of Abiding Word Lutheran Church of Melbourne, will be speaking on Sunday, June 24, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1140 N. State St. in Lincoln.

Pastor Barnhart's topics are as follows:

9 a.m. — "The Land of Israel in Prophecy"

10 a.m. — "What the Spirit is Saying to the Churches"

2 p.m. — "The State of the Lutheran Church in the 21st Century"

David Barnhart is the author of several books, including "Israel, Land of Promise and Prophecy," "The Church's Desperate Need for Revival" and "Contending for the Faith." He is editor of a newsletter, The Vine and Branches, which is mailed to Christians in all 50 states and several foreign countries. Pastor Barnhart has led 23 tours to Israel over the past 30 years.

For more than 36 years, Pastor Barnhart has served congregations in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Minnesota and Florida. In 1979, he was called as senior pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis.

In 1984, Pastor Barnhart withdrew from the Lutheran Church in America and united with the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations, a conservative church body that affirms confessional Lutheranism and the inerrancy of Scripture. Pastor Barnhart helped to found Living Word Lutheran Church in Eagan, Minn., in 1985 and served as its pastor until 1993. Most recently, he has been helping to organize a new congregation in Melbourne, Fla., where he and his wife, Mary, now reside. As a parish pastor and evangelist, he has devoted his life to calling Christians back to the foundational truths of Scripture. He conducts evangelistic services in churches throughout the United States and Canada.

Abiding Word Ministries was organized in 1984 by David and Mary Barnhart with the purpose of promoting revival and reformation throughout the church. Abiding Word Ministries endeavors to inform pastors and laity of social and theological issues now confronting the churches. They also aid congregations, pastors and laity in withdrawing from their liberal church bodies and affiliating with conservative, Bible-believing fellowships.

Ice cream social June 28

[JUNE 19, 2001]  The First Baptist Church, 101 Broadway, will host an ice cream social from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 28. Barbecue sandwiches, potato chips, cole slaw, cake and ice cream will be served. There will also be a pie auction. Proceeds will benefit a Dayton mission trip.

[MAY 4, 2001]  The Neibuhr Historic Marker Committee of Lincoln announces celebration activities on Saturday, June 23, at St. John United Church of Christ. The date and place were chosen because it was here that the internationally known theologian, teacher and Christian ethicist Reinhold Niebuhr was ordained in 1913. Well known for his theological writings, he was for a time virtually unknown as the author of the "Serenity Prayer" made popular by the 12-step community and revered by many throughout the world.

The dedication of the Illinois State Historic Marker will celebrate the entire Niebuhr family for their contributions to theology and for their service to the Lincoln area.
