James ‘Buck’ Morecraft

James "Buck" Morecraft, 80, of Lincoln died at 6:01 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001, at his home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at Kerrigan Funeral Home in Lincoln. There will be no funeral service for Morecraft. Cremation rites will be accorded.

He was a self-employed carpenter and contractor until his retirement in 1989.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

He was born on Aug. 8, 1920 in Pitwood to Herman and Bessie (Hughes) Morecraft. He married Betty Starling Baggett on May 30, 1966 in Georgia. She survives.

He is also survived by six sons, Richard of Key West, Fla., James of Cumming, Ga., David of Gardner, Michael of Lincoln, Gary Baggett of Joliet and Jeffery Baggett of El Paso; two daughters, Donna Amidon of Downers Grove and Glenda Smith of Titusville, Fla.; 30 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert and Merle of Gutherie, Okla.; and one sister, Bonnie Fay of Watseka. 

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

He was a member of Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1756 and American Legion Post 263, all of Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Illinois, Hospice Care.


Mary Ellen Powell

Mary Ellen Powell, 76, of Decatur, formerly of Chestnut, died at 4:32 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2001, at Oak Manor in Decatur.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 pm. Tuesday, May 15, at Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown.

Mrs. Powell was a housewife.

She was born June 20, 1924, in Lincoln to Roy Sherman and Nelle Agnes (Suedmeier) Lowe. She married Richard Powell in Decatur on June 28, 1949. He died April 6, 1991.

Surviving are two brothers, Tom Lowe of Chestnut and Ira "Bud" Lowe of Palatine; one sister, Shirley Hayes of Mount Pulaski; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

John LeGrand

John S. LeGrand, 87, of Springfield, formerly of New Holland and Emden, died at 9:03 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2001, at St. John’s North in Springfield.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 14, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Emden, with the Rev. Frank Pieper officiating.

Burial will be in Hartsburg Union Cemetery, Hartsburg.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Arrangements are being handled by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

LeGrand was retired from farming in the New Holland area.

He was born Dec. 14, 1913, in Sullivan to Newton and Hattie (Martin) LeGrand. He married Doris Struebing on Jan. 19, 1945, in Emden.

Surviving LeGrand are his wife, of Springfield; two daughters, Peggy Bright of Moweaqua and Marcia (Creg) Mrakava of Springfield; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Emden.

Mildred Mosier

Mildred Nena Mosier, 96, of Maple Ridge Care Centre in Lincoln died at 1:25 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, in the intensive care unit at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Lincoln.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Burial will be in Richmond Grove Cemetery, New Holland.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mosier was a farmer’s wife and homemaker.

She was born Dec. 8, 1904, in Lincoln to Nils and Emelie (Nilson) Larson. She married Warren D. Mosier on Jan. 15, 1925, in Lincoln. He died April 2, 1973.

Surviving Mrs. Mosier are three grandsons, Bob Buse of Beason, Darren Buse of New Holland and B. Lynn Buse of Hartsburg; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter (Emelie) Jeanette Buse and another daughter; three brothers, Anton, Elmer and Oscar; and five sisters, Elnora C., Olga, Elsie, Agnes and Emily.

She was a member of Chestnut United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Loyal Circle of the church. She was also a member of Logan County HIA, Logan County Homemakers Extension, Chester Woman’s Club, Joe Paloney Auxiliary of World War I and a former member of Logan County Farm Bureau.

Memorials may be made to Chestnut Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church of Lincoln or Oasis Senior Citizens Center.

Kristi Piatchek

Kristi Marie Piatchek, 23, of Lincoln died at 3:53 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2001, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Thomas Taylor officiating.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 14, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln. The rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m.

Miss Piatchek was a high school English teacher at St. Teresa’s in Decatur.

She was born Jan. 13, 1978, in Fairbury.

Surviving are her parents, John and Gay (Ruble) Bowen of Lincoln; two sisters, Jennifer Piatchek of Amboy and Julie Piatchek of Lincoln; maternal grandparents Florence and George Klockenga of Lincoln; and her paternal grandfather, Lyle Bowen of Quincy.

She was preceded in death by Earl Ruble, her maternal grandfather, and Erlene Bowen, her paternal grandmother.

She was a member of Holy Family Church in Lincoln.

She graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1996, from Lincoln College in 1998 and cum laude from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville in 2000.

Bryce Covert

Bryce Ranell Covert, 9, of Beason died at 12:05 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Pastor John Horner officiating.

Covert will be buried at Keys Cemetery, Beason.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Covert was a fourth-grade student at Chester-East Lincoln School.

He was born Aug. 3, 1991, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Covert is survived by his mother and stepfather, Lisa and Curtis Haynes of Beason; his father and stepmother, Scott and Donna Covert of Lincoln; his grandparents, Ran and Elizabeth Covert of California, Robert Johnston of Stanton, Calif., Jane Johnston of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Curtis and Mary Haynes of Lake Fork; his great-grandmother, Virginia Rettig of Hobart, Ind.; two brothers, Robert Covert and Gage Haynes of Beason; and four stepsisters, Whitney Haynes of Lincoln, Mindy Smith of Springfield, and Siara and Sarina Berry of Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Joseph McDowell

Joseph R. McDowell, 79, of Chatham, N.J., died at 4:23 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown County, N.J. He was the husband of a former Lincoln resident.

A funeral Mass will be at noon Friday, May 11, at St. Patrick’s Church in Chatham, N.J.

Graveside services, with military rites, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lincoln, with the Rev. Thomas Taylor officiating.

There will be no local visitation. Kerrigan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

McDowell was a freight claims manager for the Southern Pacific Railroad of San Francisco, Calif., and New York City, N.Y. He retired in 1982.

He was a tech sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was born March 21, 1922, in Orville, Ky.

He and his wife, the former Mary Catherine Ryan, were married 58 years. She survives, in Chatham, N.J.

Also surviving are one son, Jerrold McDowell of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.; three daughters, Patricia Minor of Lexington, S.C., Kay Compton of Byram, N.J., and Marta McDowell Bent of Chatham, N.J.; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Imogene Mason and Condi Coppersmith of Kentucky.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Carroll Catholic School building fund.
