Anthony Howe

Anthony L. "Tony" Howe, 39, of Chestnut died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 18, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski, with the Rev. Richard Stamm officiating.

Burial will be in Lake Bank Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at the funeral home in Mount Pulaski.

Howe was a postal worker in Mount Pulaski.

He was born Dec. 19, 1961, in Lincoln to Keith and Janice (Lowe) Howe. He married Wanda Jean Eckert in Lincoln on Sept. 6, 1985.

Howe is survived by his mother, of Lincoln; three daughters, Tiffany (Joseph) Kretzinger, Traci Howe and Jordan Howe, all of Chestnut; one granddaughter, Skye Kretzinger of Chestnut; his maternal grandmother, Marge Marquis of Mount Pulaski; and one sister, Robina Yvonne (Warren) Ray of Mars Hills, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his father, Keith "Pete" Howe, who died June 3, 1987.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Chestnut.

Howe was assistant girls basketball coach at Mount Pulaski Grade School.

Harold Swearingen

Harold R. "Hal" Swearingen, 74, of Atlanta, died at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 18, at Atlanta Christian Church, with Dave Harmon and Andy Glass officiating.

Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Gresham-Crutchley American Legion Post 341.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church, with Masonic rites at 8 p.m.

Quiram Funeral Home of Atlanta is in charge of arrangements.

He operated Swearingen’s FS Service Station in Atlanta from 1959 until 1967 and Hal’s Uptown Standard Service Station in Lincoln from 1971 until 1975. He retired in December 1991 as locksmith at Lincoln Correctional Center.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was born Dec. 12, 1926, at McLean, to John H. and Effie (Reed) Swearingen. He married Barbara J. Frantz on June 25, 1950, at Atlanta. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, John H. (Susan) Swearingen of Atlanta; two daughters, Laura J. (Randy) Van Hoorn of McLean and Lisa J. (Robert II) Polley of Atlanta; five grandchildren, Bryan, Christina and Katherine Van Hoorn of McLean and Joshua and Melissa Polley of Atlanta; one brother, Delmar L. (Olive) Swearingen of McKinney, Texas; one sister, Vanessa Ann Garner of Prescott, Ariz.; and a brother-in-law, Walter "Max" Fabert of Arthur.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Laura Lou Fabert.

He was a member of Atlanta Christian Church, where he formerly served as deacon and elder and as chairman of the church board. At the request of the Rev. John Cox, he founded and taught "Hal’s Angels" Sunday School class for many years. At the time of his death he was a board member of Christian TV Mission of Springfield, Mo.

He was a life member of Atlanta Lodge 165 A.F. & A.M., where he served as Worshipful Master in 1967 and 1984 and as secretary from 1985 to 2000. He was a 32nd degree Mason and life member of Valley of Bloomington Scottish Rite Temple and a member of Scottish Rite Camping Club. He was a member of Ansar Shrine of Springfield and Order of Eastern Star 351 of Lincoln.

He was a life member of National Rifle Association and a member of Harley Owner’s Group.

He was also a member of Gresham-Crutchley American Legion Post 341 and a life member of USS LSM-LSMR Association.

He was a die-hard Cubs fan and enjoyed serving as "Grandpa’s Taxi Service" for his grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to BroMenn Hospice, Atlanta Rescue Squad or Community Cancer Center of Normal.
