Leona Cress

Leona Cress, 98, of Lincoln died at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at St. Clara’s Manor.

Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Mark Carnahan and the Rev. William Adam officiating.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.

Mrs. Cress was a homemaker.

She was born Oct. 29, 1903, in Lincoln to Herman H. and Marie Hahn Dierker. She married George Cress on Jan. 23, 1930, in Lincoln. He survives.

Also surviving are one sister, Nelva Schroeder of Lincoln, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers and five sisters.

Mrs. Cress was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Lincoln, the church’s Ladies Aid Society and Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

James Blocker

James Blocker, 62, of Lincoln died at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

A graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be at the Eagles Lodge, 1621 N. Kickapoo in Lincoln, following the service.

Blocker was retired.

He was born July 1, 1939, in St. Louis, Mo., to John and Genevieve Myers Blocker. He married Jean Lowman on Nov. 6, 1956, in Lincoln. She survives.

Also surviving are his father, of Lincoln; one daughter, Kathy (and husband Troy) Craine of Lincoln; one grandchild, William James Craine; his father-in-law, Virgil Lowman of Lincoln; six brothers, John (and Bonnie) Blocker, Jerry (and Dorothy) Blocker, David (and Pat) Blocker and Mike (and Marsha) Blocker, all of Elgin, Jack (and Rita) Blocker of Vincennes, Ind., and Larry (and Betty) Blocker of Mazolla, Mont.; and one sister, Dorothy (and Dave) Starin of Elgin.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 2708 and Moose Lodge.

Orville Minder

Orville C. Minder, 92, of Lincoln died at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Maple Ridge Care Centre.

His funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Holy Family Church in Lincoln, with Monsignor Edward Higgins and the Rev. Thomas Taylor officiating.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Kerrigan Funeral Home in Lincoln. The rosary will be recited at 5 p.m., and the wake service will be at 6:45 p.m.

Minder was a farmer. He and his brother, Edgar, owned and operated Minders Dairy in Lincoln in their youth.

He was born March 19, 1909, in Lincoln to Matthew and Mary Awe Minder. He married Anna Stuan on Aug. 25, 1938, in Lincoln.

Surviving are his wife, Anna Minder of Lincoln; one son, Gary (husband of Cindy) Minder of Lincoln; one daughter, Marianne (wife of Ray) Rakers of Springfield; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.

He was a a board member of East Lincoln Grain from 1965 to 1980 and a member of the Logan County Farm Bureau.

He was a licensed pilot for over 40 years, past member of the Experimental Aviation Association and member of the Flying Farmers.

Memorials may be made to Holy Family Church in Lincoln or to the American Diabetes Association.

 


Julia Durst

Julia B. Durst, 78, of Indian Lake Estates, Fla., formerly of Homer and Elkhart, died at 9:35 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Florida.

Her funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Dan Wissmann officiating.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Mrs. Durst, a registered nurse, worked at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield and Carle Hospital in Urbana.

She served in the U.S. Army Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II.

She was born Sept. 13, 1923, in Elkhart to Everett and Louise Gluick Bock. She married Lester L. "Coogie" Durst on Sept. 19, 1948, in Lincoln.

Surviving Mrs. Durst are her husband, of Indian Lake Estates, Fla.; one daughter, Debra D. (and husband Thomas F.) Mullins III of Milford, Del; one grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lake Wells, Fla., and a past member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln.

She was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi, a past member of the American Legion in Homer and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Homer.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lincoln.

Ralph Bartman

Ralph Bartman, 86, of Lincoln died at 4:13 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at the Christian Village in Lincoln.

His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Robert Henderson officiating.

Burial will be in Richmond Grove Cemetery, New Holland.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Bartman was a retired farmer and worked for Cutler-Hammer for 17 years.

He was born July 27, 1915, at New Holland to Redmer and Hattie Bartman. He married Katherine "Dee Dee" Carr on Jan. 11, 1936, in New Holland. She died May 2, 2000.

Surviving are two granddaughters, DeeDee Lewis of Blomington and Bethany Lewis of Colfax, and one great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Cheryl Ann Lewis.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lincoln.

Florence Bauer

Florence M. Bauer, 82, of Lincoln died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Gary Zustiak officiating.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bauer worked in the Logan County treasurer’s office for 25 years before her retirement.

She was born Feb. 21, 1919, in Lincoln to George and Roxie Moore Awe. She married Walter Bauer. He died in 1975.

Surviving are one daughter, Sherrian (and husband Roy) Ekstrom of Lincoln, and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

She was a member of Broadwell Christian Church, American Business Women’s Association and Women’s Eagles Lodge.

Memorials may be made to Ronald McDonald House of Springfield or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Judith Smith

Judith Ann Smith, 55, of Decatur died at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at her home.

Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Dr. James Ash officiating.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker.

She was born Jan. 10, 1946, to Merton and Dorothy Franz Vannoy. She married Walter H. Smith Jr. on May 29, 1965, in Springfield.

Surviving Mrs. Smith are her husband, of Decatur; three sons, Rodney (and wife Kelly) Smith of Decatur, Bradley (and Angela) Smith of Altamont and Matt (and Annie) Smith of Decatur; two granddaughters, Sydney and Gracye Smith of Decatur; and one brother, Dennis Vannoy of Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She was a volunteer at Dennis School, where she served as a noon hour supervisor. She also did volunteer work for the Salvation Army, including help with the Angel Tree project.

She was a former licensed beautician and a graduate of Springfield Beauty School.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Ruby Snowder

Ruby Fern Snowder, 76, of Rigby, Idaho, formerly of Hurricane, Utah, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at the hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby, Idaho, with Bishop David Briggs officiating.

Burial will be in the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.

The family will visit with friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Snowder was nurse.

She served in the Women’s Army Corps from 1946 and 1949 and attained the rank of captain.

She was born Feb. 27, 1925, at Middletown to Roy A. and Ida Mae Bock Boward.

She married Harold Wesley Snowder on Aug. 14, 1949, at Fort Lewis, Wash. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa Arizona Temple on Dec. 29, 1967.

Surviving Mrs. Snowder are two sons, H. Dale (and wife Kristie) Snowder of Rigby, Idaho, and Garry D. (and Joyce) Snowder of Dubois, Idaho; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Louise (and Merlyn) Heyen of Middletown and Wilma Jean (and Delas) Johnson of Middletown; and one brother, Don Boward of Middletown.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she taught gospel doctrine class, was a visiting teacher, and loved genealogy and the LDS Institute program.

She graduated from the University of Chicago with a nursing degree and worked for 35 years as a county health nurse and in several private nursing homes and hospitals.

Mrs. Snowder had moved to Rigby, Idaho, to be near her family.

She enjoyed traveling and fulfilled one of her dreams by recently traveling to Guatemala and Mexico City.
