Newman, 65, of Lincoln died at 5:27 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at
St. John's Hospice North in Springfield.
Her
funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Holland and
Barry Funeral Home, Lincoln.
Burial
will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.
Visitation
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs.
Newman was an office associate at Lincoln Developmental Center for
35 years. She retired Aug. 1.

List
Donald
W. List, 82, of Springfield died at 11:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30,
2001, at his home.
His
funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Hurley
Funeral Home in Mason City, with Pastor Philip Chiles officiating.
Burial
will be in Mason City Cemetery. American Legion Jackson Keene Post
496 will conduct graveside military rites.
Visitation
will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.
List
managed Grandy Lumber Company in Mason City and was a former owner
and operator of Mason City Ready Mix.
He
was a U.S. Army first lieutenant 10th MT Division in
World War II.
He
was born Sept. 5, 1919, in Easton to Harold M. and Grace Ringland
List. He married Mardelle Fink on Dec. 20, 1942, at Mason City
United Methodist Church. She survives.
Also
surviving are one son, Larry (and wife Carol) List of Knoxville,
Tenn.; one daughter, Linda (and Hal) Langenbahn of Springfield; four
grandchildren, David (and Debbie) List, Leesa (and David) Penn,
Sarah (and Joe) Stanley and Jessica (and Jason) Boesdorfer; two
stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four
step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, RosElla (and Don) Blessman.
He
was a former member of Mason City Rotary, a volunteer fireman in
Mason City, a former member of Mason City United Methodist Church
and later a member of Lighthouse Community Church in Springfield.
He
received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star in the military
service.

Helen
L. Stephansen, 89, formerly of Friendship Manor in Lincoln, died at
11:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Illinois Veteran’s Home in
Quincy.
Her
funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Holland and Barry
Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Paul Gilmore officiating.
Burial,
with a military service, will be in Harmony Cemetery, Beason.
Visitation
will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Mrs.
Stephansen was price support manager for the U.S. Department of
Agriculture Logan County ASCS for 19 years.
She
served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II.
She
was born May 3, 1912, in Astoria to Clem Logan and Anna Luella Fink
Garton. She married Harold Stephansen on June 4, 1943, in
Monticello, Ark.
Surviving
are one daughter, Alice Mae Mathias of Bunker Hill; two
grandchildren, Suzette (Mrs. Rick) Scantlin of Girard and Charles W.
(and Kimberly) Mathias Jr. of Mount Pulaski; five
great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Iola (and Albert) Gehlbach
of Lincoln, Lois (and Julian) Schmidt of Mount Pulaski and Mary Ruth
Aderman of Lincoln.
She
was preceded in death by her husband; her twin brother, Harold Logan
Garton; one sister, Grace Garton; one infant brother; and one infant
grandson.
She
was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Daughters of the
American Revolution, VFW, DAV, American Legion Auxiliary-Lincoln,
Logan County Genealogical Society, Odd Fellows and Rebeccas, AARP
and Extended Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. She was a graduate of
Lincoln Business College. Also, she worked for Norepal Research Lab
in Peoria.

Leathers Downing, 83, of Lincoln died at 4:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1,
2001, at St. Clara’s Manor Nursing Home.
Her
funeral service will be at Kerrigan Funeral Home in Lincoln at 1
p.m. on Wednesday. Tom Gerdts will officiate.
Burial
will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.
Visitation
will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kerrigan.
Mrs.
Downing was a payroll clerk for the former Pittsburgh Plate Glass
Co. in Lincoln. She retired in 1986 after 23 years of employment.
She
was born March 15, 1918, in Decatur to James and Lennie Smart Hart.
She married Verlen "Babe" Leathers on Oct. 11, 1936, in
Peoria. He died Jan. 15, 1977. She then married Morgan Downing on
Oct. 4, 1980, in Lincoln. He died April 20, 1986.
Surviving
are two sons, Ronald (and wife Carole) Leathers of Lincoln and James
(and Dee) Leathers of Mead, Wash.; four grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
She
was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
She
was a member of Lincoln Christian Church, Lincoln Woman’s Club,
Lincoln Elks Emblem Club and the Eagles Auxiliary in Lincoln.
Memorials
may be made to Elks Crippled Children’s Fund, Alzheimer’s
Disease Foundation or St. Clara’s Manor Nursing Home.

L. Nutt, 94, of Lincoln died at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, 2001, at
Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
Her
funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Paul Gilmore officiating.
Burial
will be in Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Mrs.
Nutt was a housewife.
She
was born May 13, 1907, in Whitley County, Ind., to Harrison and
Nettie Dull Crabill. She married Harold W. Nutt in 1927 in Kewanna,
Ind. He died May 4, 1994.
Surviving
are one daughter, Karen L. Miller of Lincoln; four grandsons, Bob
(and wife Sarah) Cole of Liberty, Mo., Bill (and Susan) Cole of Cape
Girardeau, Mo., David (and Debbie) Cole of St. Charles, Mo., and
Randy (and Denise) Marcotte of Auburn, Pa.; four granddaughters, Pam
Green of Rochester, Cindy Marcotte of Lincoln, Laura Gable of
Arnold, Mo., and Linda (and Rusty) Conner of Manchester, Mo.; and 16
great-grandchildren.
She
was also preceded in death by four sisters, three brothers and one
daughter, Mary Anne Rogers.
She
was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Lincoln.
She
had lived in St. Louis for 40 years before moving to Lincoln.
