Everett Bock

Everett W. Bock, 80, of Elkhart, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Elkhart United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Beth Tickner and the Rev. Virgil Sprunger officiating.

Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery. The Elkhart American Legion will provide military honors.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Elkhart United Methodist Church.

Mott & Henning Funeral Home, Athens handled arrangements.

Bock was a fourth generation Logan County farmer.

He was a veteran of World War II. He served as a liaison pilot for the field artillery.

He was born July 5, 1921, in Elkhart to Everett M. and Louise Gluick Bock. He married Billie Haynes on Dec. 15, 1943, at Somerset, Ky. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Becky (and husband Bill) Boline of Towanda; two sons, Roger (and Lynn) Bock of Williamsville and Gerald (and Jeanne) Bock of Colchester, Vt.; three grandsons; four step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Julia Durst of Indian Lake Estates, Fla.

He was a member of the Elkhart United Methodist Church and Elkhart American Legion. He was a former Elkhart High School board member.

Memorials may be made to his church.


Floyd Schaffenacker

Floyd Schaffenacker, 94, of Mount Pulaski, died at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mount Pulaski, with the Rev. Paul Droegemueller officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Schaffenacker was a retired farmer.

He was born April 22, 1907, in rural Chestnut to Eduard and Lucy Benz Schaffenacker. He married Helen Dammerman on Jan. 1, 1934, in Mount Pulaski. She died Jan. 20, 1999.

Surviving are one son, Eddie (and wife Sue) Schaffenacker of Mount Pulaski; one daughter, Lois Stahl of Mount Pulaski; five grandchildren, Cheryl Martin of Mount Pulaski, Cathy Porter of Leawood, Kan., Doug Stahl of Denver, Colo., Susan Schueler of Glen Carbon and Scott Schaffenacker of Natchitoches, La.; and five great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Byron.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Mount Pulaski.

Memorials may be made to the Mount Pulaski Zion Lutheran Church or School.

Ira Pyles

Ira Sylvester Pyles, 69, of Lincoln died at 10:17 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at his home.

His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pyles was formerly employed at U.S. Corrugated Box Co. and at Lehn and Fink.

He was born June 19, 1932, in Louisville to Lawrence and Minnie Pyles.

Surviving are three sons, Larry Daniels of Lawndale, Roger Dale Pyles of Ellisville, Miss., and Richard Wayne Pyles of Hammond, Ind.; two daughters, Brenda Freeman of McComb, Miss., and Sherrie Evans of Pekin; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bruce Simpson of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He played in a several bands throughout Logan County for many years.
