Mildred Copeland

Mildred E. Copeland, 79, of Lincoln died at 2:10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at her home.

Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at First Baptist Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Robert Henderson officiating.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Mildred Copeland worked at Lincoln Developmental Center as a child care aid and a mental health technician.

She was born July 6, 1922, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Everett and Zella Allen Talbott.

Surviving are one daughter, Pat (and husband Dean) Huskins of Washington; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Juanita Macomson of Toccoa, Ga.; and three brothers, David (and Judy) Copeland of Austin, Texas, Larry (and Kathy) Copeland of Decatur and Rick (and Cathy) Copeland of The Colony, Texas.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Norma Spangler.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lincoln and Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

James ‘Jake’ Lowe

James C. "Jake" Lowe, 73, of Middletown died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. William Dolan officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in Lawndale Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the funeral home.

Lowe was a retired mechanic. He worked at Jacques Seed-Remington Seed for 20 years.

He served in the U.S. Army Engineering Division during the Korean War.

He was born June 2, 1928, in Carlysle, Ark., to Ernest and Lillie Stanley Lowe. He married Ruth Taylor on March 12, 1949, in Lincoln.

Surviving Lowe are his wife, of Middletown; two daughters, Cheryl Daniels of Middletown and Jacqueline Kelly of Naples, Fla.; two sons, Robert and Marion Lowe, both of Middletown; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Brouch of Lincoln; and one brother, Ward Brining of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Morton, and one great-granddaughter, Taylor Jo Kelly.

He was a member of Lincoln Hill Free Methodist Church and of the American Legion in Nashville, Tenn.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.


Sara Sparks

A graveside service for Sara C. Sparks will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln. The Rev. Thomas Taylor will officiate.

Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sparks died at age 95 on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at St. Clara's Manor in Lincoln.

She was a housewife.

She was born Dec. 15, 1905, in Lincoln to Joseph and Sarah McGarity Quinn. She married Wilbur C. "Pete" Sparks on Nov. 16, 1929, in Auburn. He died July 2, 1959.

Surviving are two daughters, Sarah A. "Sally" (and husband Benjamin) Velasco of San Diego, Calif., and Linda (and Jack) Barrick of Lincoln; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, two brothers and three sisters.

She was a member of Holy Family Church in Lincoln and St. Catherine LaBourne in San Diego, Calif.

Mrs. Sparks was an accomplished pianist and accompanied the Harry Ryan Orchestra for the first broadcast of WBBM radio, on Feb. 6, 1924, at the Atlas family home in Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to St. Clara's Manor or Community Action.

Fredric Nimke

Fredric E. Nimke, 87, of Lincoln died at 9:43 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at St. Clara’s Manor.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. William Adam and the Rev. Mark Carnahan officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are being handled by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Nimke was a bridge builder and road supervisor for Cullinan for 23 years.

He was born May 16, 1914, in Varna to Fred and Emma Bade Nimke. He married Ruth Kuntzi on Aug. 30, 1940, in Wenona.

Surviving Nimke are his wife, of Lincoln; two sons, James (and wife Connie) Nimke of Chatham and Alan Nimke of Ocala, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Lincoln and Carpenters Union Local 644.

Memorials may be made to his church.

Irene Broughton

Irene F. "Granny" Broughton, 98, died at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at St. Clara’s Manor in Lincoln.

Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Larry Maffett officiating.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Broughton and her husband owned and operated Harold’s Furniture and Linoleum in Lincoln for 30 years.

She was born April 3, 1903, in Logan County to Asa J. and Lillian Carson French. She married Harold V. Broughton on Aug. 9, 1922, in Mount Pulaski. He died June 13, 1987.

Surviving are one son, Richard "Dick" W. (and wife Ginny) Broughton of Lincoln; one daughter, Gladys Bailey of Heath, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen Martin and Anna Hessner, both of Lincoln, and Alice McKenzie of Decatur.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Robert H. Broughton; one daughter, Julia M. Broughton; one granddaughter, Jill M. Broughton; one great-granddaughter, Kara Broughton; and one grandson, Harold "Butch" Blacet.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lincoln and Willing Workers of the church. She was a charter member of Zonta Club and the Emblem Club.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
