Former Lincolnite enjoyed another rail fest

9-19-01

Dear LDN:

Just a quick note of thanks to the community of Lincoln for another enjoyable railsplitter festival — I believe it was the 30th anniversary? I can recall going to the first festival (when I was 8 years old), and I have tried to make it back to Lincoln most of the years since I moved to Chicago in 1985.

I was very impressed with the attendance, the number of different exhibits and food concessions, as well as the entertainment this year. The cowboy storyteller and antique engines were personal favorites! The weather was absolutely perfect.

And finally, after the tragic events of last week, it was very uplifting to see the people of Lincoln come together and show their patriotism and sense of community — the foundation of what built America over the last 200-plus years.

My sincere thanks to the organizers and the city of Lincoln for this event — already looking forward to next year!

Best regards,

Jeff Weingarz

Stop-arm violations put children at risk

9-18-01

To the editor:

I am a school bus driver for special needs children in Lincoln. I love my job, and I take it very seriously. When the children are being loaded, unloaded or riding in the bus, they are my responsibility.

On the bus there are big red and amber lights. These lights flash when activated by me. There is also a large red stop sign, that has four large red flashing lights, that protrudes from the left side of the bus.

When I am loading or unloading children onto my bus, I first MUST activate the amber lights to caution drivers that I will be stopping. I usually activate these lights about one block from my destination. When I spot the child who is riding on the bus, I immediately come to a complete stop and open the service door. This activates the red caution lights as well as the stop sign. These red lights are not a suggestion to stop. It is the law.

Every day I get people who speed past my stop arm and red flashing lights. This is just like running a stop sign or stoplight. When this is done, the violator puts the children at risk.

I am making it a point to write down any and all information that I get from the violator’s automobile. I then take it to the city police and turn it over to them. They in turn track down the violator and turn the complaint in to the states attorney's office.

I am asking all drivers to look around when you drive. The biggest excuse I get is, "I didn't see you." How could you not see a big yellow school bus with several red and amber lights flashing on it?? If you are unable to spot a school bus, then maybe you should not be able to drive.

Thank you.
