              8-14-02 Dear
              Editor:
In regard to recent news stories
reporting an increased rate of hospital acquired infections, I
feel it is important for people to be aware of the safety
precautions and standards that are in place at their local
community hospital. As the infection control coordinator, I would
like to share with you some information on infection control as it
pertains to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
              We have an infection control
committee to establish procedures for preventing, investigating,
reporting and controlling infections. This committee consists of
physicians and staff from pathology, administration, nursing,
housekeeping, pharmacy, laboratory, medical records and central
supply. Their goal is to ensure that the hospital is a safe
environment for patients, visitors and employees.
At ALMH, it is a requirement that
every staff member attend a minimum of at least one
infection-control education program annually. It is my
responsibility to monitor every patient with an elevated
temperature and/or a positive culture report. As the employee
health nurse I also monitor the illnesses of all employees to
prevent infection of patients or other employees.
As a result of our hard work and
diligence, the hospital-acquired infection rate at ALMH is only
one quarter of the rate reported in the literature and as reported
by federal statistics. During a recent survey by the Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, ALMH
scored among the top 10 percent of hospitals surveyed in areas
              including infection control.
We take great pride in the
cleanliness and modernization of our facility and equipment and
invite members of the community for a tour of ALMH to see for
themselves. For a guided tour of the hospital, please call
              732-2161, Ext. 316.
              Sincerely,
              Karen Cluver, RN
Coordinator for Education, Employee Health and Infection Control
