Animal control concerns

To the editor:

Thank you for posting the names, districts, addresses, phone numbers and committee appointments for the newly elected Logan County Board. [Click here for lists.]

Animal control concerns have been an ongoing struggle in this community for many years. My husband and I are still being told horrific stories surrounding the issue of controlling and humanely treating stray animals and are concerned that the problem is not getting better. We have also recently been personally involved in the struggle to get Animal Control to respond when an incident occurred at other than their "regular office hours."

Animal Control Committee meets the second Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at that facility. The next meeting is Wednesday, Dec. 11. I would appreciate members of the press being at that meeting because we have been told there will be some serious issues brought before the committee. The newly created committee consisting of Patrick O'Neill (chair), Charles Ruben, David Hepler, John Stewart, Terry Werth and Dale Voyles (county board chairman) needs community support in their struggle to ensure cost-effective and humane treatment of the animals in response to the constituents’ need for help in this area.

I urge everyone to attend this meeting and talk with their city or council representatives to be sure we are responsive to the needs of constituents and the animals unlucky enough to be stray.

Voices need to be heard

Dear Editor:

Dec. 4 could change the anti-abortion effort and our First Amendment rights forever. On July 12, the American Center for Law and Justice filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court asking for the court to overturn a federal court ruling that allowed the use of the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute against pro-life organizations. This act was written to combat drug dealers and organized crime; it was not intended to be used against people who wish to express their opposition to abortion or any other issue. If the National Organization of Women, which brought the suit against Operation Rescue, prevails, it will ultimately shut down the anti-abortion movement, send it into bankruptcy and open the door to silence other protests on any issue.

[to top of second column in this letter]

Millions of dollars have been awarded to abortion clinics since the start of the suit in 1986, paving the way for more clinics and the murder of millions of innocent children. We must act now!! Call your congressmen and tell them to urge the Supreme Court to overturn this case. This is a violation of our First Amendment right to freedom of speech, and our right to protest. More importantly, we must send a message to the justices of the Supreme Court, telling them that we will not be stripped of our right to fight for the unborn child!

Call the following congressmen: Ray LaHood, (202) 225-6201; Peter Fitzgerald, (202) 224-2854; John Shimkus, (202) 225-5271; and Dick Durbin, (202) 224-2152.

Scully family

To the editor:

Am hoping a descendant of William Scully might hold some info on my great-great-grandpa, Jeremiah Scully. They were close cousins and were involved in a shooting incident in 1849. Charges were brought against them at Clonmel Assizes, Tipperary, but later dropped.

Does any Scully in Logan County have any info on my Jeremiah?

Sincerely,

Eileen Campbell
