The new
site,
www.illinoisroads.info, will be a source for road construction
information, winter road conditions, traveler safety information,
maps, trucking permits and other travel information.
"These
are some of the most visited sites on the department's website,"
Illinois Transportation Secretary Kirk Brown said. "Instead of the
public having to navigate through our entire website for travel
information, we felt we could better serve travelers by having all
of that information in one location and at an Internet address that
is easier to remember."
The
department's main website (www.dot.state.il.us)
will continue to offer the traveling public the same information as
www.illinoisroads.info. The department also plans to expand the
www.illinoisroads.info website in the future to offer additional
services focusing on travelers of Illinois highways.

Road
construction information that will be provided includes a statewide
map of construction sites on state highways along with text
information about the projects, detailed information about
construction projects in the greater Chicago area, and information
on major projects under way throughout the state. It will also have
information about construction projects over major holiday periods
and a link for weather forecasts throughout the state.
For
winter road information, the site will provide a map of the
conditions on interstate highways across Illinois along with text
information for the whole length of the routes. This information
will be updated approximately every two hours during major winter
storms.
Truckers
will be able to file for special permits or check restricted
roadways, and the public will be able to order a highway map, find
rest area locations, find tourism information and get information
about DUI and safety belt laws.
