Splain
Margaret
Hyde Splain, 82, of Lincoln died at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12,
2002, at the Christian Village Nursing Home.
Her
funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Holland and Barry
Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Larry Maffett officiating.
Visitation
will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial
will be in Harmony Cemetery, Beason.
Mrs.
Splain was a teacher.
She
was born July 1, 1919, in Crawfordsville, Ind., to Harry and Julie
Gwynn Hyde. She married Donald William Splain in Champaign.
Surviving
are her husband, of Lincoln; four children, Julie (and Steven)
Conham of Ann Arbor, Mich., Thomas H. Splain (and Kristin Ertel) of
Lincoln, William D. Splain (and Deborah Wright) of Brooklyn Park and
Daniel L. Splain (and Linda Trapp) of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; one
sister, Elizabeth Hyde of Champaign; and one brother, Paul Hyde of
Villa Park.
She
was preceded in death by one daughter, Caroline Splain; three
sisters, Lois Hyde, Lelia Keel and Nancy Schantz; and one brother,
Roland Hyde.
She
was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lincoln, P.E.O. and
Delta Kappa Gamma.
She
graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in music and
taught for a number of years at Lincoln Community High School. Later
she taught at elementary schools until retiring in 1980.

Sheldon
Louis Goodman, 76, of Decatur died at 9:10 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11,
2002, at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.
Visitation
will be from 4 to 8 pm. Thursday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral
Home in Mount Pulaski.
The
funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home in
Mount Pulaski, with the Rev. Eugene Worthey officiating.
Burial
will be in Steenbergen Cemetery, rural Mount Pulaski.
Goodman
retired in 1987 from Lincoln Developmental Center, where he worked
as a laborer.
He
was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He
was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Rockport, Ind., to James and Olive Ranger
Goodman. He married Lois C. Shrader Green on April 1, 1994, in
Decatur. She survives.
Also
surviving are two sons, Leon Goodman of Denver, Colo., and Richard
(and wife Sally) Goodman of Taylorville; three daughters, Loretta
(and husband Ron) Merold, Jane (and Pat) McDonnough Sr. and Marilyn
(and Dennis) Beggs, all of Mount Pulaski; two stepdaughters, Nancy
(and Bob) Payton of New Concord, Ky., and Lois (and Ed) Creager of
Maroa; 12 grandchildren and seven stepgrandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren and 18 step-great-grandchildren; and one sister,
Hazel Pope of Moweaqua.
He
was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one
granddaughter.
He
was a member of Gospel Chapel of Decatur.

may be made to St. John’s Hospice, American Cancer Society or the

Shaffer
Shirley
Jean Shaffer, 80, of Lincoln died at 11:05 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11,
2002, at her home.
Visitation
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home
in Lincoln.
Her
funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Prairieland Christian Church
of Hartsburg with Chad Ragsdale and Wayne Shaw officiating.
Burial
will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.
Mrs.
Shaffer taught in the elementary school at Lexington for 25 years.
She
was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Hartsburg to John T. and Dorothy Mae
Shirley Behrends. She married Orvil E. Shaffer on April 30, 1945, at
Corpus Christi, Texas.
Surviving
are her husband, of Lincoln; two daughters, Sharol Murphy of Lincoln
and Karen Rae Rice of Flower Mound, Texas; five grandchildren; one
great-grandson; and three sisters, Marianne Wagner of Emden and
Dorothy Kay Mullins and Lois Rae Merskin, both of Lincoln.
She
was also preceded in death by one sister, Ramona Lee Behrends.
She
was a graduate of Lincoln College and of Illinois State University
in Normal.
She
was a member of Prairieland Christian Church of Hartsburg and played
the piano and organ for her church for many years. She also played
the piano for many school functions. It is said that "for her,
the song is ended, but the memories linger on."
She
was active in the Fun-O-Leers and the Lincoln Christian Nursing Home
Auxiliary.
She
was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Christian Nursing Home or Prairieland Christian Church of Hartsburg.

‘Doc’ Finfrock
Charles
E. "Doc" Finfrock, 82, of Waynesville died at 10:54 a.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield.
Visitation
will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Quiram Funeral Home, Atlanta.
The
funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with
the Rev. Al Simonson officiating.
Burial
will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Waynesville.
Finfrock
farmed in the Waynesville area all his life. He also was a rural
mail carrier in the U.S. Postal Service. He worked out of the
Atlanta post office and retired in 1988 after 27 years of government
service.
He
was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He
was born Aug. 4, 1919, at Waynesville to George W. and Nellie
Williams Finfrock. He married Jean Brumfield on June 25, 1949, at
Wapella. She survives.
Also
surviving are three sons, Steve Finfrock of Effingham, Dave Finfrock
of Waynesville and Bob (and wife Sharon) Finfrock of Waynesville;
two grandchildren, Stacy and Andrew Finfrock; one brother, Lonnie
Finfrock of Wasila, Alaska; three sisters, Grace (and husband
Francis) Goff of Mission Viejo, Calif., Lottie Scott of Rockford and
Elsie (and Casey) Fletcher of Camdenton, Mo.; and several nieces and
nephews.
He
was preceded in death by three brothers, Bowen, Donald and Barney
Finfrock.
He
was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association.

Harry
Rogers
Harry
Rogers, 85, of rural Armington died at 5:17 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11,
2002, at Hopedale Medical Complex in Hopedale.
Visitation
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Armington Christian
Church.
The
funeral will be at the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with Harold
Williamson and Vernon L. Oakley officiating.
Burial
will be in the Rogers family cemetery, rural Armington.
Quiram
Funeral Home in Atlanta is in charge of arrangements.
Rogers
worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company, East Peoria, during World War
II and returned to Caterpillar for 10 years before retiring in 1982.
He farmed 64 years at the Elliotts’ Wolf Grove Farm, rural
Armington. He also was manager of the Sutter Siding Feed Mill and
Hopedale Milling Company for several years.
He
was born Feb. 19, 1916, at Hopedale to Kenada and Sally Burgess
Rogers. He married Maxine Orvetta Elliott on Feb. 20, 1938, at Wolf
Grove Farm, rural Armington. She survives.
Also
surviving are two sons, Elliott D. (and wife Wanda) Rogers of
Armington and Dennis L. (and Gale) Rogers of Melbourne, Fla.; seven
grandchildren, Randall Harkrider of Austin, Texas, Denise Harkrider
of Jacksonville, Fla., Jason Harkrider of Bastrop, Texas, Jeremy
Harkrider of Dallas, Texas, Jamie Harkrider of Houston, Texas, Amy
(and Shawn) Rogers Hohulin of Minier and Clint (and Monica) Rogers
of Armington; and one great-granddaughter, Bailey Joy Rogers of
Armington.
He
was preceded in death by one daughter, Bonita Rogers Harkrider, five
sisters and five brothers. He was the youngest of 11 children.
He
attended Burt and Gilbert country schools and graduated from Hittle
Township High School, Armington.
He
was a 68-year member of the Armington Christian Church.
He
was a past member of The Sound of Illinois Barbershop Chorus and was
delighted to sing with that group at a Chicago Cubs ball game. He
was an avid fan of the Cubs and Mark Grace.
Memorial
