Team
of the week
1-12-02
Dear
Editor,
What
a shame that your Mr. Mayfield failed to recognize a 7th Grade
Basketball team as "the team of the week" for the
current week since the 7th Grade County Tournament was held at
Zion this week. Since you passed up the opportunity, we would like
to recognize West Lincoln-Broadwell's Coach Brett Farmer,
Assistant Coach Eric Riechert, and their 7th Grade Team, this
year's 7th Grade County Champions. Their record of 19 wins and no
losses is the result of their hard work, dedication, and teamwork.
Coach Farmer sets a fine example for these young men, both on and
off the court. We wish to congratulate him, Coach Riechert, and
the team on an exciting season, thus far! Keep up the great work!
You definitely earn our vote for "Team of the Week"!

Kids have a loving home at LDC

Editor:
There
has been a lot of discussion about the possible closing of LDC. I
am a resident of Lincoln, don't work at LDC, but have worked at
JDC in Jacksonville, Ill., so am highly affected by what is going on.
What the governor is doing makes me so angry! I have kept my
opinions to myself, but what I saw on our local television station
last night (Thursday the 20th)... I had to get my 2 cents in.
Public Health and Governor Ryan have no feelings for anyone except
the ones who bow down to their feet. As far as I am concerned the
staff is just doing what God asks of us. To love and care for one
another. These individuals that have a possibility of losing their
home and the ones that have already been transferred are going to
be going into backward behavior. And by taking some to JDC I know
for a fact that they won't get the love, care and attention they
received at LDC. So to the parents: please monitor closely. If the
governor would take the time to spend a shift on each unit, go to
some annual reviews, just spend one on one time with these kids
then he would have a change of heart and read each of their
programs then he would see things differently. Get to know the
staff, parents, but most of all the kids whose HOME he is taking
away.

Talk
with the young people in your life about alcohol, tobacco and
other drugs

Editor:
I
have been the prevention specialist at Logan-Mason Mental Health
for the past 3½ years. My job is to educate the youth of Logan
County on the hazards of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. In the
past few weeks there have been some devastating incidents in Logan
County. There was a marijuana incident at the middle school level;
there was an alcohol and a controlled substance incident at the
high school level; and many drinking and driving incidents. These
are just the few that I know about, and your kids are talking
about them. I hear it everyday in the schools that I go to.
What
I want to communicate with the residents of Logan County is that
educating our youth is not just one person’s job. It is the job
of every parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or adult with a young
person in their life. As a result of these occurrences, this is
the ideal opportunity for you to discuss your feelings on drugs
with your child. I wish these things did not have to happen, but
they did. It happens every day, and it is our kids. We cannot use
the excuse "not my kid" anymore. Please talk with your
kids about this, because if they are not talking to you about it
they are talking with someone else about it. Make sure your kids
know your feelings on this issue.
