Frieda Webb

Frieda M. Webb, 100, of Mason City died at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City, with Pastor Bruce Bolin-Ghitalla officiating.

Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Mrs. Webb was a homemaker.

She was born Dec. 8, 1901, in rural Mason County to Frank and Pearl Hindahl. She married Clark P. Webb on Dec. 22, 1920, in Springfield. He died July 7, 1977.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Harry Frank Webb and Raymond C. Webb, and three brothers.

Surviving are 10 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary, both in Mason City.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mason City United Methodist Church or Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Lloyd Slayton Sr.

Lloyd E. Slayton, 73, of Lincoln died at 5:50 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Tracy Thomas officiating.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Slayton was a machine repairman at Caterpillar in Peoria for 31 years. He drove farm tractors for Vernon Klockenga, his nephew, for 16 years.

He served in the National Guard.

He was born Sept. 20, 1928, in Lincoln to William Hiram and Pearl Wood Slayton. He married Laura L. Harris on Aug. 17, 1951, in Midland City.

Surviving are his wife, in Lincoln; two sons, Lloyd E. (Ed) Slayton Jr. (and wife Bridget) of Lincoln and Roger Wayne Slayton (and wife Terri) of Lincoln; two daughters, Laura Diane Slayton of Lincoln and Cynthia Lynn Jackson (and husband Tim) of Lincoln; seven grandchildren, Christina Alexander, Brad Slayton, Erika Slayton, Rachael Slayton, Nicole Phillips, Megan Jackson and Timothy Jackson Jr.; and one great-grandchild, Kylee Alexander.

He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers. He was the last of his immediate family.

He was a member of Lincoln Christian Church, Eagles Lodge 2708 and a Caterpillar union member.

Memorials may be made to Ronald McDonald House or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Ernest Oland

Ernest Oland, 81, of Lincoln, formerly of Mount Pulaski, died at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Maple Ridge Care Centre in Lincoln.

His memorial service will be at noon on Friday, Jan. 18, at the interment chapel at Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove. Pastor Ron Markese will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Holland and Barry Funeral Home, Lincoln, is in charge of arrangements.

Oland was a printer for GTE. He retired in 1983.

He was born March 2, 1920, in Denmark to Christian and Agnes Jensen Oland. He married Thelma Brendle in Chicago in 1946. She died Dec. 3, 1986(?).

Surviving are two sons, Roger Oland of McHenry and Glen Oland of Aurora; one daughter, Laura Papuga of Lincoln; eight grandchildren; and one sister, Edith Paulsen of Villa Park.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Christian Oland.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Des Plaines.

He was an avid bowler.


Jess Sampson

Jess V. Sampson, 99, of Lincoln died at 2:18 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2002 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Lincoln Hill Free Methodist Church, with Pastor William Dolan officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Sampson worked at the Stetson China Factory for over 30 years. He had previously worked at the Illiopolis Ammunition Plant. He also was employed at an upholstery shop for 15 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I.

He was born March 2, 1902, in Fairfield to Charles and Bessie Overall Sampson. He married Nona L. Shelton on Sept. 2, 1922, in Lincoln. She died March 4, 1990.

Surviving are three sons, Richard Eugene (and Ilene) Sampson of Tucson, Ariz., Jack (and Goldie) Sampson of Lincoln and Larry W. (and Mary) Sampson of Lincoln; one daughter, Marian Daniels of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Hazel Kingsley of Daytona Beach, Fla., Margaret Meyers of Dayton City, Fla., and Alice (and Dellous) Gillison of Fairfield.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Pearl Kingsley, and four brothers, Roy, Ray, Elmer and Albert Sampson.

Sampson was president of the union at Stetson’s, lay minister at the Church of God in Lincoln and taught Sunday School at Lincoln Hill Free Methodist Church for a number of years.

Memorials may be made to Lincoln Hill Free Methodist Church.
