‘Pete’ Petersen Jr.

Lester Kenneth "Pete" Petersen Jr., 70, of Lincoln died at 8:12 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2002, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lincoln Masonic Temple, with Masonic rites at 8 p.m.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Dan Wissmann officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in Zion Cemetery.

Petersen retired from CILCO in 1994 after 25 years of service. He was supervisor of line crews.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was born May 7, 1932, in Bement to Lester Kenneth and LaNora Tabitha Karr Petersen Sr. He married Fran Sloan on June 24, 1987, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Survivors are his wife, of Lincoln; one son, Kenneth Leo (and Theresa) Petersen of Lincoln; one stepdaughter, Tina (and Harold) Hinds of Petersburg; two grandsons, Cody Lee Petersen of Lincoln and Devan Hindt of Petersburg; and two brothers, Gayle (and Vi) Petersen of Creal Springs and Warren (and Wanda) Petersen of Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one daughter.

He was a member of Lincoln Christian Church.

He was a life member of Lincoln Lodge 210 A.F. & A.M., where he was past master and had been secretary for the last 10 years. He received the 33rd degree in Boston, Mass., in 1996.

He was also a member of Constantine Commandery 51, Lincoln Chapter Royal Arch Masons 147, Lincoln Council 83, Valley of Springfield Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, past potentate of Ansar Shrine in Springfield, past worthy patron of Lincoln Chapter 351, Order of Eastern Star, Abraham Shrine 100, past president of Logan County Shrine Club, New Salem Shrine Club, Decatur Shrine Club and past commander of Ansar Legion of Honor.

He was a member of the advisory board for Lincoln Assembly Rainbow for Girls and a recipient of Grand Cross of Color from the International Order of Rainbow for Girls

He was also a recipient of Legion of Honor from the International Order of Demolay, St. Edwards Red Cross of Constantine and Knights of the York Cross of Honor.

He was past president of Wayne W. Gatewood Chapter 536 National Sojourners and a member of Heros 76, Kachina Billikin Klub, Elks Lodge 914, American Legion Post 263 and Taylorville Moose Lodge 1516.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children or Lincoln Masonic Foundation.

Pauline Montgomery

Pauline Mary Montgomery, 97, of Mason City died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in Mason City. The Rev. Bruce Bolin-Ghitalla will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Mrs. Montgomery was a homemaker.

She was born Nov. 17, 1904, in Mason City to John and Anna Osterloh Lager.

She married Perry Montgomery on Dec. 2, 1924, in Mason City. He died in 1953.

Surviving are one son, Robert Montgomery of Easton; one daughter, Marcia Kirby of Mason City; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

She was a member of Mason City United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Ramona ‘Babe’ Veff

Ramona "Babe" Veff, 72, died at 8:07 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2002, at her home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader, with Ted Harvey officiating.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mrs. Veff retired from Eaton Corporation as an assembler in 1972. She had also worked at Armour’s.

She was born Sept. 13, 1929, in Mason City to Raymond and Helen Frazier Auxier. She married Glenn Veff on April 17, 1959, in Havana.

Surviving are her husband, of Lincoln; one son, William Veff of Clinton; four daughters, Diana (and Jim) Brennan of Springfield, Linda (and Butch) Logan of Atlanta, Carolyn Armstrong of Clinton and Linda (and Cliff) McBenge of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one granddaughter.

She was a member of the Christian Church of Mason City and of the VFW Auxiliary.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Illinois.

‘Jack’ Detjen

John "Jack" F. Detjen, 69, of Lincoln died at 10 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2002, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd, with Pastor Roger David officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in Hartsburg Union Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Detjen was purchasing manager for Cutler-Hammer Eaton Corporation for 37 years. He retired in 1996.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was born July 2, 1933, in Chicago to the Rev. John and Hildegard Lange Detjen. He married Mary Reiners on Feb. 10, 1952, in Emden.

Survivors are his wife, of Lincoln; three daughters, Diane Detjen of Lincoln, Denise (and Vic) Martinek of Lincoln and Deborah (and Herman) Galligos of Lincoln; five grandsons, Bryan Galligos, Jeremy Galligos White, John Martinek, Andrew Galligos and Thomas Martinek; one brother, Detlef (and Georgia) Detjen of Orland Hills; and one sister, Dolores (and Gene) Chapman of Emden.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lovey Meeker.

He was a founder of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Lincoln, pastoral assistant and president of the congregation.

He also served on the Logan Mason Rehabilitation board, Oasis board of directors and was on the Salvation Army board for 20 years.

He was past president of Purchasing Managers Association of Illinois, a member of Lincoln Elks 914, Kentucky colonel and pastor commander of American Legion Post 506.

Beulah Peterson

Beulah Peterson, 86, of Lincoln died at 10:28 a.m. Sunday, July 21, 2002, at her home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader.

Mrs. Peterson will be cremated.

She was a homemaker.

She was born Feb. 5, 1916, in Petersburg. She married George M. Peterson on May 14, 1952, in Great Morrow, N.C.

Survivors are her husband, of Lincoln; two daughters, Theresa Sullivan of Lincoln and Nadine (and "Red") Carr of Maryland; three sons, Ronnie (and Debbie) Peterson of Florida, Charles (and Ann) Peterson of Maryland and Arthur (and Connie) Peterson of Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James I. Snyder and Bessie Kay Snyder Day, five brothers and one sister.

She was of the Lutheran faith and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and American Legion.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Wesley Aper

Wesley J. Aper, 72, of Lincoln died at 8:55 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Maple Ridge Care Centre.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hartsburg Union Cemetery, with Brother Dean Hill officiating.

Aper was a resident of Lincoln Developmental Center for 47 years.

He was born July 20, 1930, at Hartsburg to Harry F. and Frances Trepel Aper.

Surviving family members are four brothers, Ronald H. (and wife Peg) Aper of Atlanta, James F. (and wife Cathy) Aper of Littleton, Colo., Gene E. (and wife Mary Ann) Aper of Lincoln and Wayne Aper of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and one sister, Elizabeth M. Kingsley of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty Lou Aper.

He was of the Lutheran faith, and memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hartsburg.


Vicki McGrath

Vicki Viola McGrath, 37, of Lincoln died at 1:50 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader.

Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Beason.

Mrs. McGrath was a housewife.

She was born June 17, 1965, in Lincoln to James and Rose Van Fossan Edwards. She married Randy McGrath on Aug. 27, 1999, in Lincoln. He survives.

Also surviving are her mother and stepfather, Rose and Ron Musick of Lincoln; her father, James Edwards of Beason; one son, Dalton McGrath of Lincoln; one daughter, Megan McGrath of Lincoln; one sister, Carol Edwards of Lincoln; her maternal grandmother, Virgie Van Fossan of Lincoln; and her paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Edwards of Beason.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandfathers.

She was of the Christian faith.
