Flood watch extended until 4
p.m. today north of Interstate 72
The flood watch includes the following central
Illinois counties: Stark, Knox, Marshall, Peoria, Woodford, McLean, Tazewell,
Fulton, Vermilion, Mason, Champaign, Logan, Piatt, De Witt, Schuyler, Menard and
Cass.
A few rounds of heavy rainfall have fallen over the
watch area north of I-72 during the past week. Additional heavy rainfall is
expected today across central Illinois as an upper level disturbance and frontal
boundary move east across the state. Thunderstorms will produce locally heavy
rain of 1 to 3 inches in an hour or two into midafternoon, causing possible
flash flooding.
The ground remains wet, and some streams have
elevated water levels. Additional heavy rainfall will likely result in flooding
along streams. In addition, heavy rainfall with some stronger storms will
increase the threat for flash flooding of low-lying and urban areas.
A flood watch means that conditions are favorable
for heavy rain that may lead to flooding of low-lying areas and along streams.
If you are in the watch area, remain informed and be ready to take action if
flooding is observed or a warning is issued.
Stay tuned to NOAA weather radio or your local
media for further updates and possible warnings.
