Alcohol incident

3-18-02

To the editor:

We first want to express our sympathy to the families of the young people involved in the recent fatality on Fifth Street Road.  Your pain must be almost unbearable, and we wish we had words to comfort you.

Having said that, we are absolutely outraged at hearing that alcohol, and who knows what else, may have been supplied from a parent’s home, and the fact that this particular parent had recently lost a child due to an alcohol-related crash is beyond our ability to understand! Wasn’t one young person’s death enough?

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Task Force of the Healthy Communities Partnership has worked for nearly four years to coordinate efforts and enlist the support of the county around prevention efforts for our youth.  The task force has worked tirelessly to educate young people regarding the dangers involved in consumption of these harmful, even deadly substances.  We have provided activities, educational events and worked with youth to fight ATOD use.  We have encouraged parents, business owners and the community at large to join our efforts.

Perhaps, in the face of this tragedy, parents and community members will consider joining the task force in this fight.  Sadly, it’s too late for one young man.

Appreciates Read Across America coverage

3-7-02

To the editor:

Thank you to Gina from Lincoln Daily News for the complete coverage of Read Across America activities in Lincoln Elementary District 27.

Staff members and students in our schools "work hard" at having fun while reading, and we appreciate the opportunity to share the joy of reading with others.

Sincerely,

Renee Dreusicke

Title I reading and math teacher at Northwest and Jefferson schools

Praise for commentary and commentator

3-2-02

Dear Editor:

I have never met Mike Fak. I have had, however, over the past six months or so, the pleasure of reading his commentaries on LDC and life in Lincoln. In fact, I just finished reading his article "Racial Profiling: Let’s Look Within."

I find Mr. Fak to be an extremely well-reasoned, articulate and informed person. He raises questions that ought to be raised, he does not moralize, yet he causes his readers to think and look beyond the obvious.

LDN is fortunate to have him as a commentator, and I enjoy his viewpoint. It’s too bad more people outside Lincoln do not have access to his writing.

Sincerely,

Ed Stanfield Sr.
