Paul
Edmund Rankin, 92, of Lincoln died at 3:35 p.m. Saturday, May 4,
2002, at the Christian Nursing Home. He had lived at Friendship
Manor for six years.
His
funeral will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at First Presbyterian
Church, Lincoln, with the Rev. Paul Gilmore officiating.
Family
and friends will attend the private burial, with military rites, on
Friday in New Union Cemetery.
Holland
and Barry Funeral Home, Lincoln, is in charge of arrangements.
Rankin
had worked at the State National Bank of Lincoln and Lincoln
National Bank (First National Bank). He taught instrumental and
choral music in several Logan County schools. He was an advertising
salesman for WPRC radio from 1952 to 1978. After retiring, he worked
for the Credit Bureau of Lincoln.
He
was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II.
He
was born June 14, 1909, in Lincoln to John W. and Lucy M. Hamman
Rankin. He married Helen Musa Kent on July 2, 1939, in Lincoln. She
died Dec. 2, 1994.
Surviving
are two daughters, Mrs. Michael L. (Jean) Anderson and Mrs. Stephen
L. (Susan) Rohrer, both of Lincoln; four grandsons; and one
great-grandson.
He
was also preceded in death by one brother, Harold T. Rankin, and one
sister, Helene L. Bell.
He
was a graduate of Lincoln Community High School and attended Lincoln
College.
During
his military service, he was stationed at Maxwell Field in Alabama,
where he played baritone, trombone and string bass in the 604th
American Air Force Band. He also played in the Air Force Dance band
that was started by Glenn Miller and sang with the concert band as a
soloist. He also was a paid soloist for the Dexter Avenue Methodist
church in Montgomery, Ala., during World War II.
He
was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lincoln and directed
the church choir. He was also a member of the choir at Lincoln
Methodist Church.
He
was a member of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Illinois,
a 52-year member of Lincoln Lodge 210, a member of Lincoln Chapter
147 Royal Arch Masons, Constantine Commandery 51 Knight’s Templar,
American Legion Post 263, Logan County Farm Bureau and a lifetime
member of the Musician’s Union local. He served as a board member
of the Lincoln Community Concert Association and The Oasis.
He
was a member of French’s Military Band and director of the Lincoln
American Legion Band. He played for many years in dance bands
directed by Harry Ryan, Tuby Davidson and Al Pierson, in the
"Dutch" Soldwedel Maple Club Band and the Darrell Last
Trio.

Scroggin
Helen
E. Scroggin, 85, of Lincoln died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, May 5, 2002,
at her home.
A
memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski. Bill Shanle will officiate. There is
no visitation.
Burial
will be in Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski.
Mrs.
Scroggin was a homemaker for her family.
She
was born Sept. 6, 1916, in Fairchild, Wis., to Walter and Nelia
Florence Hoy Bertrang. She married Harold B. Scroggin in St. Louis,
Mo. on Dec. 10, 1940.
Surviving
Mrs. Scroggin are two sons, Terrance Shane Scroggin of Woodland
Hills, Calif., and Louis Dean "Butch" Scroggin of Mount
Pulaski; six brothers, William O. Bertrang, Donald Lee Bertrang,
Dean L. Bertrang and Byron "Barney" Bertrang, all of
Fairchild, Wis., Walter H. Bertrang of Tennessee and Rodney H.
Bertrang of Texas; and two sisters, Dorothy Davis of Mount Pulaski
and Ira Palms of Thoop, Wis.
She
was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Byron Michael
Scroggin; and two grandsons, Terry Michael Scroggin and Byron
Michael Scroggin Jr.
She
was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
