Howard Leonard

Howard Leonard, 79, of Lincoln died at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Larry Maffett officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in New Union Cemetery.

Leonard was employed in the sales department of Ball Foster Glass for 37 years and owned Leonard’s Cafe for 22 years. He retired in 1987.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was born April 18, 1923, in Cornell to Lloyd and Claire Dickerson Leonard. He married Marjorie "Marge" Ketterer on Aug. 31, 1947, in Cornell. She survives.

Also surviving are two children, Ron Leonard of Sherman and Trudy Sampson of Bolyston, Mass.; four grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marjorie Logue of Streator.

He was a member of First Methodist Church and the church board. He was also a member of the Masons, the Scottish Rite Valley and Ansar Temple Shrine of Springfield, Constantine Commandery of 51, Logan County Shrine Club, a life member of the Lincoln Elks, life member of the American Legion Post 263, and a member of the VFW and 40&8. He served on the Lincoln High School board, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce board and United Way board. He was with Easter Seals for 29 years, president of the Midstate Society for 15 years, president of Logan County Shrine Club in 1974, Chef de Gare of 40&8 in 1957 and was named a Lincoln Courier Citizen of the Month in the 1980s.

He was a graduate of Cornell High School in Cornell and attended Illinois State University in Normal.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Lincoln or to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.


Marilyn Durchholz

Marilyn M. Durchholz, 79, of Mount Pulaski died at 5:43 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2002, at her home.

Private visitation for the family will be at Veail Chapel, with Fricke-Calvert Schrader Funeral Home of Mount Pulaski in charge of arrangements.

Burial will be in Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski.

Private services for the family will be at a future date. Bill Shanle will officiate.

Mrs. Durchholz was a homemaker for her family.

She was born Dec. 3, 1922, in Mount Pulaski. She married Elmer "Butch" Durchholz on Dec. 29, 1942, in Bowling Green, Mo.

Surviving are two sons, Richard Wayne (and Kay) Durchholz of Mount Pulaski and Dale Leroy (and Dawn) Durchholz of Bloomington; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Leroy Keith "L.K." (and Dolly) Buckles Jr. of Mount Pulaski and Henry Frank (and Irma Jean) Buckles of Mount Pulaski.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy Keith Buckles Sr. and Helen F. Copeland.

She was a member of Buffalo Christian Church, Mount Pulaski Christian Church, Christian Church Loyal Daughters, American Legion Auxiliary and Junior Woman’s Club. She was a longtime 4-H leader in the community and worked at the Logan County clerk’s office for a number of years.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Auxiliary for VA hospital work.

Harry Menzel

Harry W. Menzel, 85, of Lincoln died at 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church of Lincoln, with the Rev. Larry Maffett officiating.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Menzel was a petroleum salesman for Logan Farm Service for 28 years.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

He was born April 2, 1917, in Lincoln to Julius and Carolina Jaggi Menzel. He married Dorothy Earle in Malden, Mo., in 1943.

Surviving Menzel are his wife, of Lincoln; four sons, Harry Earl (and Jean) Menzel of Kankakee, David (and Pat) Menzel of Springfield, Michael (and Marsha) Menzel of Williamsville and Scott (and Wendy) Menzel of Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Menzel of Lincoln; and one brother, Julian (and Elsie) Menzel of Lincoln.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lincoln and the church’s Volunteers in Mission and was a driver for the food pantry. He was also a member of American Legion Post 263.

Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association or Logan County Food Pantry.

Dixie Charron

Dixie L. Charron, 59, of Waynesville died at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Quiram Funeral Home, Atlanta.

The funeral service, also at Quiram, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Dan Sherstad will officiate.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Waynesville.

Mrs. Charron was employed at Country Companies in Bloomington for over 20 years. She worked in the Country Life General Accounting Department.

She was born Aug. 24, 1942, at Waynesville to Howard E. and Betty E. Garr Sympson. She married Wayne A. Charron on Nov. 24, 1965, at Kankakee. He died Aug. 15, 1999.

Surviving are one daughter, Brenda L. Messamore of Normal; one son, Brian K. Charron of Waynesville; two stepdaughters, Jeanette Clenin of Jonesboro, Ark., and Rhonda Lucas of Florida; one stepson, Kevin Charron of Jonesboro, Ark.; four grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dale (and Donna) Sympson of Clinton, Ed (and Sandy) Sympson of Atlanta and Gary (and Gale) Sympson of Waynesville; one sister, Sherri (and Steve) Welch of Waynesville; several nieces and nephews; her stepfather, Richard W. Webb of Clinton; and her stepgrandmother, Vera Webb of Clinton.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be made to the Waynesville Rescue Squad.


Willard Grubbs

Willard Dale Grubbs, 52, of Leslie, Ark., died at 11:20 a.m. Sunday, May 12, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Burial will be in Funks Grove Cemetery, Macon County.

Grubbs was retired from maintenance work for the Logan County Housing Authority in Lincoln.

He was born Jan. 10, 1950, in Woolum, Ark. He married Debbie Morris Laskin in Decatur in November 1979.

Surviving Grubbs are his mother, Daisy E. Ray of Lincoln; his stepfather, Jack L. Duncan of Decatur; one son, B.J. Grubbs of Decatur; one sister, Jane Fairbanks of Lincoln; cousin William Ray of Leslie, Ark., who was raised with Willard like a brother; and a nephew, J.R. Maple of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his father, John L. Grubbs.

He was of the Protestant faith and was a member of the National Rifle Association.
