Edward Butkovich

Edward R. Butkovich, 67, of Mount Pulaski died at 5:16 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the Three Rivers Hospital emergency room, Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the gymnasium at Mount Pulaski High School. A prayer service at 3:30 p.m. will precede the visitation.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Church in Lincoln, with Father Edward Higgins and Father Eugene Kane officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.

Holland and Barry Funeral Home, Lincoln, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Butkovich was a teacher and basketball coach. His teams at Mount Pulaski High School won the state tournament in 1976, placed fourth in 1977 and second in 1984.

He was born Aug. 3, 1935, in Canton to Edward C. and Wilma Hezlep Butkovich. He married Patricia A. Wise on June 21, 1958, in Canton.

Surviving are his wife, of Mount Pulaski; two daughters, Julie (and husband Harvey) Horton of Sherman and Cindy Butkovich-Harris (and husband Rick) of Maroa; and three grandchildren, Ashley and Nicholas Horton of Sherman and Molly Harris of Maroa.

Mr. Butkovich taught and coached at Bath Balyki High School beginning in 1958. He then coached basketball and taught at Mount Pulaski High School until he retired, in 1996. At the time of his death, he was an assistant coach at Lincoln College. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association

He was named the IBCA Coach of the Year for 1976-77 and entered the IBCA Hall of Fame. He also received the IBCA Championship Award.

He was chosen as District Coach of the Year for the seasons 1974-75, 1975-76, 1979-80 and 1983-84.

He had also received the Western Illinois University Alumni Achievement Award.

He was a Lincoln Courier Man of the Month and received the Lincoln Courier Achievement Award.

He was named the Decatur Herald and Review Coach of the Year for 1976 and also in 1984.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He lived for two things in life: his family, which was always first, and his love for the game of basketball. He will be sadly missed by everyone he knew, because he was a special kind of man.

Memorials may be made to Mount Pulaski High School Boys Basketball Scholarship, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association or Mount Pulaski Library Fund.

 

Shawn Smith

Shawn Smith, 32, of Waynesville, formerly of Bloomington, died at 4:10 p.m. Saturday Nov. 2, 2002, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Mr. Smith was cremated. There will be no visitation.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Cemetery, Waynesville.

Quiram Funeral Home, Atlanta, is in charge of arrangements.

Shawn Smith was born March 23, 1970, in Peoria to Rodger and Dorothy Walker Smith.

Surviving are his parents, of Waynesville; his maternal grandmother, Hattie Stone of Wapella; his paternal grandmother, Berline Smith of Waynesville; and two brothers, Andy Smith of Bloomington and Jason Smith of Atlanta.

 


Anna Carroll

Anna Marie Carroll, 96, of Mason City died at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Her funeral was at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in Mason City, with the Rev. Bill Boyce and the Rev. Bruce Bolin-Ghitalla officiating.

Burial was in Mason City Cemetery.

Mrs. Carroll was a teacher at several rural schools and retired after teaching several years in the consolidated school in Mason City.

She was born July 25, 1906, in Mason City to Ike and Della Watkins Pottorf. She married Tom Carroll on Dec. 26, 1939, in Keokuk, Iowa. He died Sept. 5, 1979.

She is survived by a niece, Dorothy (and husband Floyd) Imig of San Jose.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mason City Area Nursing Home.

 

Nancy Dabbs

Nancy C. Dabbs, 58, of Lincoln died at 2:05 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elkhart Cemetery, with the Rev. Tony Shuff officiating.

There is no visitation.

Kerrigan-Peasley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born April 2, 1944, in Lincoln to Russell and Ruby Hunter Fuiten. She married John Cleve Dabbs on June 5, 1961. He died Aug. 21, 1988.

Surviving are four sons, John R. Dabbs of Lincoln, Kevin Dabbs of Mason City, David Dabbs of Springfield and Russell Dabbs of Fenton, Mo.; two daughters, Tammy Dabbs of St. Louis, Mo., and Debra Dabbs of Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Donald Fuiten and Howard Fuiten, both of Lincoln.

Mrs. Dabbs was a member of New Wine Fellowship.
