L.K. Buckles Jr.

L.K. Buckles Jr., 78, of Mount Pulaski died at 10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mount Pulaski Christian Church.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with John Robertson and Bill Shanle officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski.

Mr. Buckles was a retired farmer. He was township supervisor for 36 years and a member of the Logan County Board for 17 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was born March 26, 1924, in Mount Pulaski to Leroy Keith and Helen Copeland Buckles Sr. He married Dolly L. Campbell in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 22, 1945. She survives.

Other survivors are one son, Leroy Keith (and Terri) Buckles III of Jacksonville, Ark.; one daughter, Lisa Jill (and Stephen) Rinkel of Mahomet; five grandchildren; one brother, Henry F. (and Irma Jean) Buckles of Mount Pulaski; and one brother-in-law, Elmer Durchholz of Mount Pulaski.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Durchholz.

He served on the commission that built the Logan County Safety Complex and on the boards of the Abraham Lincoln Healthcare Foundation and Logan County Housing Authority.

He served two terms as commander of American Legion Post 447, where he was sergeant-at-arms for the past 30 years. He was also a member of the Logan County Council of the American Legion.

He was a trustee for the Mount Pulaski Historical Society and a member of Mount Pulaski Christian Church, where he served as a deacon for many years.

Memorials may be made to the church or to American Legion Post 447.

Ida ‘Babe’ Baker

Ida ‘Babe’ Baker, 90, of Lincoln died at 10:50 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Skyview Nursing Home in Jacksonville.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln, with Father Thomas Taylor officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are being handled by Kerrigan-Peasley Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Mrs. Baker farmed in rural Lincoln with her husband.

She was born Jan. 7, 1912, in Lincoln to William and Emma Dady Quinn. She married Grover C. Baker in Chicago on Sept. 6, 1940. He died Jan. 20, 1972.

Mrs. Baker was a member of Holy Family Church and the Eagles Auxiliary.

Charles Parr

Charles Parr, 78, of Mason City died at 8:19 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in Mason City.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church of Mason City, with the Rev. Bruce Bolin-Ghitalla and Nash Shawgo officiating.

Burial will be in Richmond Grove Cemetery, New Holland.

Mr. Parr was a lifelong farmer in the New Holland area.

Edward Butkovich

Edward R. Butkovich, 67, of Mount Pulaski died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002. Pronouncement of death was at 5:16 p.m. at the Three Rivers Hospital emergency room, Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the gymnasium at Mount Pulaski High School. A prayer service at 3:30 will precede the visitation.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Church in Lincoln, with Father Edward Higgins and Father Eugene Kane officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.

Holland and Barry Funeral Home, Lincoln, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Butkovich was a teacher and basketball coach. His teams at Mount Pulaski High School won the state tournament in 1976, placed fourth in 1977 and second in 1984.

He was born Aug. 3, 1935, in Canton to Edward C. and Wilma Hezlep Butkovich. He married Patricia A. Wise on June 21, 1958, in Canton.

Surviving are his wife, of Mount Pulaski; two daughters, Julie (and husband Harvey) Horton of Sherman and Cindy Butkovich-Harris (and husband Rick) of Maroa; and three grandchildren, Ashley and Nicholas Horton of Sherman and Molly Harris of Maroa.

Mr. Butkovich taught and coached at Bath Balyki High School beginning in 1958. He then coached basketball and taught at Mount Pulaski High School until he retired, in 1996. At the time of his death, he was an assistant coach at Lincoln College. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association

He was named the IBCA Coach of the Year for 1976-77 and entered the IBCA Hall of Fame. He also received the IBCA Championship Award.

He was chosen as District Coach of the Year for the seasons 1974-75, 1975-76, 1979-80 and 1983-84.

He had also received the Western Illinois University Alumni Achievement Award.

He was a Lincoln Courier Man of the Month and received the Lincoln Courier Achievement Award.

He was named the Decatur Herald and Review Coach of the Year for 1976 and also in 1984.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He lived for two things in life: his family, which was always first, and his love for the game of basketball. He will be sadly missed by everyone he knew, because he was a special kind of man.
