Martha Van Hilsen

Martha Van Hilsen, 96, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Her funeral was at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion United Methodist Church, Emden, with the Rev. Doug Rettig officiating. Visitation was one hour before the service.

Burial is in Green Hill Cemetery, rural San Jose.

Mrs. Van Hilsen was a homemaker for her family. She and her husband farmed 47 years in Logan and Tazewell counties. Later she made her home with her daughter and son-in-law Darlene and Howard Parr.

She was born July 9, 1906, in rural Delavan to George P. and Matilda Proehl Appenzeller. She married Henry J. Van Hilsen on Sept. 24, 1932, at the home of parents in Delavan. He died Oct. 12, 1979.

Surviving are two daughters, Shirley J. Westen (and husband Loren) of Emden and Darlene A. Parr of Emden; three grandchildren, Julie R. Westen Landers (and husband Walt) of Lawndale, David L. Parr (wife and Kristi) of Sherman and Lori A. Parr Miller (and husband Keith) of Grayslake; six great-grandchildren, Zach and Carman Landers of Lawndale, Kirsten and Megan Parr of Sherman, and Jessica and Hannah Miller of Grayslake; one sister, Lillian Conley of Morton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by son-in-law Howard E. Parr and one brother, Arthur Appenzeller.

She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church of Emden and the United Methodist Women.

Memorials may be made to her church or to Mason City Area Nursing Home.

 

 

 

Alma Twardos

Alma Twardos, 83, of Lincoln died at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Kerrigan-Peasley Funeral Home, Lincoln.

Ruth Stone

Ruth L. Stone, 74, of Mason City died at 9:55 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at her home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in Mason City.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mason City Presbyterian Church. William Swaar will officiate.

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Mrs. Stone was a homemaker.

She was born Feb. 7, 1928, in Crane Creek Township, Mason County, to G. Kirby and Zelma King Rutledge. She married Richard C. Stone on Sept. 14, 1947, at the Mason City United Presbyterian Church. He survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lois Anne (and Carol) Duewer of Mason City; one grandchild; and one brother, Harvey (and Jane) Rutledge of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary Helen Schmidt; and one brother, Richard Rutledge.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Mason City, Mason City Women’s Club, Mason City Home Extension, 4-H House Cooperative of the University of Illinois and the Sangamon chapter of the American Diabetes Association. She was a member of the Saturday Night Dance Club in Springfield for many years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sangamon chapter of the American Diabetes Association.
