Dear
Lincoln Daily News and readers:
As I leave my position as director of
the Healthy Communities Partnership and the Rural Health
Partnership, may I wish all of you the best in the coming year. I
have been honored to help develop the task forces and programs of
the partnerships. The work of these groups has become a symbol of
what the community of Lincoln and Logan County can do when people
put aside their personal agendas and work together for the health
and welfare of each other.
The mobile health unit and the services
it provides have been a joy to help create and see implemented. I
still get a lump in my throat when I see it driving along a country
road to one of our rural communities. I urge all of you to support
the mobile unit, not only with your financial support, but also by
making use of its programs and services in your communities. I have
never worked with a more professional group of women than the staff
of the mobile unit. They are true professionals in every sense of
the word, and I'd trust my well-being to them any day.
The alcohol, tobacco and drug
prevention programs in the junior high classes in Logan County have
been successful in educating youth about the risks involved in use,
but there is still much to do. Please support the efforts of the
educators; theirs is not an easy task. Encourage your children to
discuss what they have learned in class, and attend the parents'
days at your child's school to see what they have accomplished.
The task forces of the Healthy
Communities Partnership have worked hard to make a difference in
Logan County. Through their efforts much has been accomplished, but
the challenges remain. Every task force needs more participants,
more ideas, more support.
[to top of second column in this
letter] |
If you have a special interest in
helping people, your children, your neighbors, your friends, I urge
you to get involved! Just talking about problems accomplishes
nothing, but working together on problems can literally change the
world! If you have an interest in working to reduce use of alcohol,
tobacco and other drugs, join the ATOD Task Force. If teen pregnancy
and working with young "at risk" families is of interest,
participate in the Healthy Families Task Force. If your interest
lies in working with victims, law enforcement and the courts to stop
domestic abuse and violence of any sort, join the DAV Task Force. If
you want to help make a difference in the lives of our older
residents, the Senior Issues Task Force may be for you.
To the media of Logan County -- please
continue your support and coverage of the work of these groups.
Getting the word out about the fine work being done is so important
in maintaining the vitality of the partnership. Thanks for all you
have done in the past, and thanks for all you can do in the future.
While I will be leaving the position as
director of the Healthy Communities Partnership and the Rural Health
Partnership, I intend to remain active. I will be doing what I urge
all of you to do -- volunteer to work with others to continue to make
Lincoln and Logan County a great place to live. God bless you all,
and I'll see you at a task force meeting soon!

(Note: This letter was
sent to the CILCO office in Lincoln.)
To the
editor:
On Christmas Eve, at approximately 4:30 p.m., there
was a traffic accident in Mount Pulaski, which caused a power outage for the
north 75 percent of town. Immediately our telephones started ringing from
various churches wanting to know when the power would be restored because they
had Christmas Eve Services scheduled.
My first call was to Lisa Funk. Lisa has been my
"go to" person for quite some time, especially when we have a problem. Lisa was
out of town on vacation, yet she returned my call and assisted with obtaining
information concerning the outage. I was extremely impressed with her dedication
in assisting us, even while she was on vacation.
The initial reports concerning the outage were not
very good. Because of the holiday situation and the fact that initially we
thought a power pole would have to be replaced, we were advised that the outage
could last from six to eight hours. However, there were several people who came
to our rescue and repaired the problem in a much shorter time.

Helen Cox called me and advised that people from
Lincoln and Springfield would be arriving in Mount Pulaski shortly to work on
the problem. Shortly after talking to Helen, the Mount Pulaski Fire Department
reported that CILCO was already on scene. Mr. Kevin Ritchhart had started with
repairs and was awaiting the crew from Springfield for additional help. Mr. Tim
Stout, Wes Heckman and John McCray assisted Mr. Ritchhart, and the power was
restored at 7 p.m. The outage was caused by a broken wire.
On behalf of the mayor and city council of Mount
Pulaski, I wish to acknowledge the fine work and dedication of the people named
above who came to our rescue on Christmas Eve. Because of their dedication, some
Christmas Eve Services were held, and local celebrations were also saved. Thank
you one and all for a great job! We really appreciated your efforts.
Sincerely,
Michael R. Patridge
Director
of Public Works
