The Oasis, Logan County's senior citizen center, 501 Pulaski St. in Lincoln, is open weekdays (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is also open on Friday and Sunday nights for table games. Dominic Dalpoas is the executive director. Activities are open to all Logan County senior citizens, regardless of membership.

Thursday potluck

Join us at 11:30 a.m. Thursday for a summer celebration featuring hamburgers, hot dogs and a sundae special for dessert. Bring a dish to pass or a $3 donation.

Stay for bingo, sponsored by The Oasis, at 1 p.m. and the free lunch drawing sponsored by the Blue Dog Inn.

Ticket deadline for July 12 card party

Thursday is the last day to buy tickets for the Saturday card party, which starts with a luncheon at noon, followed by pinochle, bridge and rummy games at 1 p.m. Stop at the front desk to buy your ticket for only $8.

July 15 -- baked turkey and stuffing

Stop in before noon Monday and buy your $3.50 ticket for turkey, trimmings, salad, bread and butter served on Tuesday, July 15.

Oasis board of directors meetings

Meetings of The Oasis board of directors are open to the public and are scheduled for the third Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. The next three meeting dates are July 17, Aug. 21 and Sept. 18. To schedule agenda items for one of the monthly meetings, the board must receive notification in writing on or before the fifth day of that month.

Computer classes

A few seats are available for the word processing class scheduled for July 14-18 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The cost is $15 for members and $18 for nonmembers. Call 732-6132 for a reservation.

[JULY 5, 2003]  Patricia (Leski) and Franklin D. Howerton Sr. of Wilmington, Del., formerly of Lincoln, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on July 20.

They plan to celebrate with an Alaskan cruise given to them by their children.

The Howertons are parents of Rosemary Falkowski and husband Edward, Francine Segner and husband Karl and Franklin D. Howerton Jr., all of Wilmington, Del. Grandchildren are Edward and Adam Falkowski and Brianna and Jillian Segner, also of Wilmington.

Franklin worked 25 years with the Wilmington (Del.) Fire Department. Patricia is a homemaker.

Elkhart sponsors

[JULY 8, 2003]  Elkhart Christian Church is sponsoring a benefit for Susan McNeil on Saturday, July 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Elkhart Community Park. The event includes a hog roast dinner, 50-50 drawing and a silent auction of a quarter of beef from Hanner's Farm, along with many other items.

Ms. McNeil, from Elkhart, was stricken with an unexplained and undiagnosed illness on Jan. 21. The illness, accompanied by flulike symptoms, caused septic shock to ravage her system. By the time she got to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, she was near death, with a blood pressure reading of 50/25.

The Lincoln hospital stabilized her and rushed her to the intensive care unit at Decatur Memorial Hospital. In order to revive her vital organs, the doctors had to give her medicine to rush the blood to them and bring up her blood pressure. Essentially, this starved her extremities (hands and feet) of blood flow, and they began to turn black. She was in the intensive care unit for eight days battling for her life. Septic shock is often fatal, but she fought hard and won.

Several months went by as Susan stayed in the hospital and watched her fingers and toes, hoping for the best. The doctors had to wait to do any surgery until her health was better and there was a clear line to show where the damage stopped. Eventually she underwent surgery to remove most of her fingers (except one thumb) and all of her toes.

After three months in the hospital, she's finally home now but has missed work since January. She is employed by Contech Construction Products in Springfield as an order correspondent, typing orders in on a computer. She is hoping to return to work soon.

She has had to learn how to do everything over again, from dressing to eating to typing, so she can return to work. She is a single mother with two teenage kids, a car payment, mortgage and medical bills beyond belief.

She moved to Elkhart just two years ago, and the town has opened its arms to her and her family. It's as if the town is one big family that is there for each other in times of need. Susan has said she couldn't have moved to a better community than Elkhart. She would like to thank everyone and especially the families from Elkhart Christian Church.

For the benefit dinner on Saturday, tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for kids. Tickets for both the dinner and drawing can be purchased at the Talk of The Town in Elkhart or from Sherry Hall, (217) 947-2352.

We are more conscious and appreciative, first about those we love and see every day. Next, we have a newfound appreciation for those who risk their lives every day as rescue workers and protectors of life and property in our communities. We also now think more about our military men and women who are committed to serve and protect our country. Many are away engaged in battle, some are in waiting to go, all are ready to lay their lives on the line in defense of our freedom.
