People all across this country and, in fact, around the world, claim roots in Logan County. They have very interesting stories to tell, and some of them like to connect with those of us who stayed at home. Logan County Diaspora publishes the stories of former Logan County residents. With their permission, we also include their e-mail addresses so that old friends might be reunited. If you wish to be part of the Logan County Diaspora, e-mail ldneditor@lincolndailynews.com.

Merriman and mule     Send a link to a friend

[JULY 14, 2003]  Jesse Merriman, 18, son of Brenda Stoltzenburg Merriman, a former Lincoln resident, has qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo in Farmington, N.Mex. The most unique feature of his participation is that he rides a mule. There has never before been a mule in the national finals.

Jesse and his roping partner, Kelly Lacey of Mount Vernon, will compete in team roping on July 22.

Jesse will also be showing in an all-mule show in Columbia, Mo., in August.

He graduated from Mount Zion High School in May and was awarded a scholarship from the High School Rodeo Association.

He won his first trophy at 18 months and started roping at age 2½. He has been showing, breaking, training and shoeing horses all his life. He has been roping off his mule, Tex, for three years.

His grandparents are Janice Stoltzenburg of Decatur and Bill Stoltzenburg of Oreana, both formerly of Lincoln, and Carl Merriman of Decatur.
