Children invited to Junior
Master Gardener program

[MAY 16, 2003]  University of Illinois Extension of Logan County is offering a Junior Master Gardener program for children who will be enrolled in third, fourth or fifth grade in the 2003-2004 school year.

Local student wins national award

[MAY 16, 2003]  Competing against approximately 7,000 school winners from throughout the United States, Christina Xamis, a Lincoln Community High School senior, has won a national Principal's Leadership Award scholarship.

Joyce Hubbard, principal at Lincoln Community High School, announced the award, which includes a $1,000 college scholarship. The National Association of Secondary School Principals and Herff Jones Inc. will present 150 of the awards.

Principals in high schools throughout the country can nominate one of their student leaders for the Principal's Leadership Award. Nominees are selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. Nominated students also are required to write an essay.

This year at Lincoln Community High School Christina is the student body president, a member of National Honor Society, was selected to the Central State 8 academic all-conference team and was homecoming queen. She has been a cheerleader all four years and has been a member of the speech team and Spanish Club. She is an excellent role model for others and helps with the DARE program.

This fall she plans to attend the University of Missouri to study broadcast journalism and pre-law.

In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities -- the term for extracurricular activities as coined in "Breaking Ranks: Changing an American Institution" -- as well as academic performance, the PLA scholarship helps assert the importance of a well-rounded education. "Breaking Ranks," the high school reform report issued by National Association of Secondary School Principals in partnership with The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, says co-curricular activities should be an essential part of the school curriculum.

National Association of Secondary School Principals is the nation's largest school leadership organization, with a membership reaching toward 40,000 middle level and high school principals and assistant principals. The organization administers the National Honor Society, the National Junior Honor Society, the National Association of Student Councils and the National Association of Student Activity Advisers, collectively serving an additional 40,000 advisers and more than 1 million students.

National Association of Secondary School Principals is also the sponsor of National Student Leadership Week.
