I'm glad to see this column ["Serving
in the military," posted in Lincoln Daily News].
After graduating from LCHS in the
spring of 1967, I served in the U.S. Air Force from July 1967 until
October 1989.
Looking back I can see a marked
improvement in the way the military folks are perceived now versus
then. Keep up the good work.

The ship never should
have even been considered sinking. Like it or not, that was a good
facility and very much needed. Some of the mentally challenged
cannot live in private homes. They need to be cared for 24-7, and
it's not like they are going to be getting a job anytime soon.
Have the naysayers ever toured the facility and visited the areas
where the really severely mentally challenged live?
It's all about money, not about the
welfare of these special folks or their families. Instead of cutting
the budget where it shouldn't be touched, why not start with the
salaries of our state government. |
If you can
lay a tax on Lincoln because of the expenses of Chicago,
maybe you should pick Chicago's pocket for the Lincoln
facility.
There are
some sacred cows that shouldn't be touched, and this is one
of them.

ship that sank is rising again."]

Today (May 10) was a great day... My
son Joseph M. Spanos received the loudest applause, with some even
standing, when they called his name to receive his associate degree
certificate at graduation.
I want to especially point out the
following professors who took the time to help guide my son through
the last two years:
Mr. Joe Baker
Mr. Tony Thomas (coach)
Mr. Jim Bixby (counselor)
Mrs. Paula Knopp (adviser)
Mr. Miley
And most of all Mr. Tony Schilling
(director of admissions)
|
On behalf of my family and I, we thank
you for helping our son find the direction he needed!
Finally, to the people of Lincoln...
Thank you for giving the students the welcome they needed when they
first arrived!
Have a safe summer!
Mr. and Mrs. Gene T. Spanos
Park Ridge
P.S. Joe has
been accepted to Columbia College and will now continue to follow
his dream in the field of computer animation.

To the

I just read in the
paper online where ICC has put in different percentage increases
regarding a water rate increase.
I do not serve on a
committee and am unemployed, but I do receive a disability check
once a month, which puts me in a low income level. I am against this
rate increase because it will be impossible for ones like myself,
senior citizens, the unemployed and ones with young ones and ones
who are working for minimum wage to make ends meet. People,
especially seniors, have it rough now deciding whether to pay rent
or pay for their needed medicine.
|
I think a petition
should be started and then in August be presented to ICC to show
that the town of Lincoln, Ill., is against this. This is just one
person’s opinion, but when everyone sticks together, victory will be
won.
